Average height?

My female Rottie is 6-3/4 months old and is standing only 20.5 inches at the shoulder. Do you think that is an average height or do they tend to be taller? When I took Sasha to get fixed, the vet said she didn't look as old as she was. Her mother was average size and her father was huge. Do they grow in spurts like children? I'd appreciate some feedback. Thanks!

Hi Cindyincanada-that`s my name and I`m in Canada grrr, lol, just kidding :D would`t want this to get moved to behavior(territorial agression)-Selket was 21&1/4 at 6 m,23 at 7 m,now 26&1/2 at 18 m.(just grew that last inch a couple of months ago). She has lots of time to grow, besides a female Rott isn`t supposed to be taller than 25?

I wondered about the same thing with my female rottie. She was 18" at 6 months!!! So i thought she was really gonna be pocket sized. However, now at 11 months she is 23", and a little light at 65lbs. I did my best not to let her grow too fast.

Wouldn't worry about it, female rotties are 22-25" i think, and your's would probably reach that standard. I was sure mine wasn't gonna, but she did.

Better for you if she not huge-you could pick her up if need be.

Thanks for making me feel better. (Although I love my baby and it wouldn't matter if she was pocket sized.)
I actually measured her again today when she was standing straighter, and she is more like 21.5 inches. She's so nicely proportioned anyway that it doesn't matter how big she turns out. Thanks again!!

Since this is not a health related question, I have moved it to General Information.

They do grow in spurts, & as others have said, Sasha will keep growing for some time to come!

On reading this thread, I decided to measure my male(5 mos 1 week). He is 20 or 21" (hard to tell, he's in a wiggly mood right now!) & weighed 56lbs on Friday.

My 8-month old is 23" and 73 pounds. I would be very happy if she didn't get much bigger. I love my beautiful "teacup" Rottie. :D

OK,
So Julius is 7 1/2 months and 25 inches at the shoulder. Does this mean he will still gain some height? If so, since hight growth slows to a stop after a year, how much more should I expect out of him hight wise? Thats a little under 5 months he has to add some hight to his frame, if he keeps on growing at the same rate he has been I'm afraid he might turn into a giant!!!

"So Julius is 7 1/2 months and 25 inches at the shoulder"

Good golly! You're sure he's 25" already? Yikes.

My males have all gotten taller- though at a slower pace- until 2 years old. Then they have gained in head, neck and body width until 5 years old

23" is NOT a small size for a female. It is actually the PREFERRED height (23 1/2" is the middle of the standard for females). 22" is a small female but still within the standard

Wow, this is funny - a very old thread revisited! :D

Back when Cooper weighed a mere 56lbs....FWIW I believe he's about 25" at the shoulder now, at 2 1/2 years old.

Yes Julius is 25" at the shoulder, infact as his frame is right now his back actually slopes up so the peak of his height is probably around 26". He is a tad over 80 lbs right now and looks very healthy for his frame. So.....should I expect Taller? I would say his father is the better part of two inches taller then he is right now and a good 20-30 lbs.

Thanks!

Ryan

All I can add is that different lines mature at different rates. While you can most likely make some general comparisons, it's not likely you'll find an exact answer.

I've seen both males and females reach their adult height earlier than 12-15 months. Then I've seen the opposite where another inch or so occurrs between 18-16 months.

My female (almost 2) is from a particularly slow line. She's in the middle of the height standard, but still a bit light for competition. We do 2 miles a day to keep her in good condition, but I don't expect any extra "bulk" before age 3.

Ben was about 75 pounds at 10 months. He was a bit skinny too - but what rescue dog isn't when they first come into the program?!?!?

He is now a healthy 80 pounds, and stands about 24-25 inches at the shoulder. I don't know if he grew UP any more after we adopted him, but his chest did get wider.

They few younger fosters (8-12 months old) I've had that I have seen as adults hadn't grown in height but had begun to look like adults. No gangly puppy legs and skinny bodies like they had when they were here....still had those goofy puppy-ish faces tho!

I like my large breed dogs in smaller packages...:D :D ...not micro-Rottie but ben's size is perfect for me...and we're always asked how old he is...people think he's still a puppy, and are amazed when I tell them he turned 4 years old in April!
