Best Tug Toys?

As Parker has gotten bigger, so has his jaws. So our tug games with his ropie have become a little risky as he chomps up the toy to get a better grip.

I'm looking for a better tug toy for my growing boy. The key here is, I don't want something heavy!! Parker loves to swing these sort of things around. So that takes you out at the knees in a heart beat - never mind the cats, coffee tables, wall unit, chairs, etc.....

What do you have that you can recommend for tug in the house? I'm assuming just another, longer rope toy - but maybe you guys have a better idea! :)

Instead of buying rope toys, go to a hardware store - you can buy all sorts of rope by the foot, and knot it up any way you want.
And the T-shirts work really well too!

I use an old towel. I don't care if she shreds it to pieces, and it works well to tug with. :D

I buy rubber rings for my dogs to play tug with. I have a lab and a rottie and I don't give them towels or old tee-shirts to play with. My rottie is fine with old towels and tee-shirts but my lab would take it as a signal that he could eat any clothes or towels.

I also buy rope and make my own rope tug toys. It's much cheaper than buying rope toys at pet stores.

Trish - I answered a similar thread and suggested the Riot Tug Stick. I know you're doing alot of training too, so I would think this would be a great toy to incorporate into your regimen. You can slip it into your shirt or waistband too, and pull it out as a special reward, or at the 'release' between Obedience routines.
I got ours at school, but I'm sure a search will yield a variety of places to order one. Try J and J Dog supply, or cleanrun.com
Best wishes -
kathy

Tugs made for Schutzhund are probably the best 'bought' tug for real tugging. Any tug made out of jute and not too hard is great for a puppy (and young dog). Rolled up burlap or towels work well too. Do a search on Sch. equipment to find these (you can't buy in a pet store).

You can see what we used with Maddie at 5 months for foundation bite work at Maddie

You can see the tie to the rag in both pictures. The tension from the rag prevents the shaking behavior that you mentioned. In Sch it is desireable to have a calm full grip and no shaking/thrashing around. This behavior will transfer over to the dumbbell work as well.

Have fun...
