You cant. It's consider a "fault." If he is a pet quality pup, and not for show, I wouldn't worry about it.

If he's only 5 months old it is possible that the coat will eventually correct some, if not totally.

thanks for the replies, he was bought as show quality and am going soon, I just gave him a bath last night and that is what is making it stand up and wavy I hope.

Hi Bird,

Gucci is now 1 year old. He came from good lines and a Breeder who loves the breed. I was pretty upset when at 3 months old his coat started to become wavy. I remember my friends at the Shutzhund club(Gretchen and Dave) saying it might correct itself when he blows his second or third coat. Suprise....he now has a perfect coat..no waves. His VP-1 also stated slightly wavy on the top.
I am sure it will correct itself around 8-9 months old. Good luck!

OK here goes nothing the AKC standard describes a wavy coat as a fault........show me a dog without a fault and I will show you someone who is kennel blind! There is no perfect dog and in breeding it just depends on what you are willing to accept and what is easiest to fix in the least amount of generations. Personally I will breed a slight cosmetic fault such as a wavy coat as it is much easier to breed out than a structural fault. Oh and BTW my old Specials bitch who had a wavy coat was A/C V1 Select Ch and also had her CD and that was owner handled for most everything! So just my humble opinion but I would not consider the animal a pet even if the coat does not totally correct if the dog was superb in all other ways ie: structure, type, temperament etc!

My boy Jake showed some waves at 9 weeks and still wavy at 10 months from shoulder blades to hips along his spine.

I just had him neutered and never intended to show him in conformation. His "finger waves" will not harm our obedience and therapy goals :D

People always comment on how cute his "curls" are
