Make your vet visit goes easier...

I dont know about you guys but i love it when people compliment my dogs. It makes me feel like i have been a good dad. Well in the last few days i have gotten two very good compliments and i realized that they go hand in hand.
the first was from a group of joggers: yesterday the weather was really nice, so i got the dogs tie outs out and we sat in the front yard and had a picnic(the front yard isnt fenced). as they ran by they stopped and made a huge fuss over how good they looked, one guy really hates rotts because he was bitten by one, and he said he had to say Daz had a great coat.

the second(and the reason for this topic)was from the vet:
as he checked Daz over he was checking fro fleas and looking at his feet and he reamarked how calm and cooperative Daz was. He asked me what i did to get him so used to being touched all over and not resisting having his nails cut(apparently big dogs Dont usually like this)but I said nothing, then it hit me.

we groom everday and he get his feet brushed and his pads checked everyday, not to mention about 20min of brushing and combing. so when the vet has to do these things he doesnt even care he never struggles and the vet gets done quickly. he said that he wished all people did this with thier dogs(of any size) it makes his job go easier and it keeps you from having to wrestle ith your dog and hold it down, just to get its nails clipped.

I agree I love it when people comment on my dog. They used to with my Rotti, especially the Vet and nurses they said he was gorgeous and placid and easy to treat. Often people in the street would stop to pat him and complement me on him and his shiny coat. Now I have a Westie I've found more people stop and talk to me as she is a really cute looking dog. Somedays we have to avoid going certain streets as we see too many people that want to stop and pat her and talk about her. Westies aren't that abundant here in Australia yet. I saw a gorgeous Rotti today and it really made me miss owning one. :D

DoggGuy,
True, those compliments sure do feel good. I also do a few things with my pups preparing them for checkups ect. At about 6 weeks of age I place them on top of my kitchen counter to do nails and ears.

Being on a slick surface, taking away the control of being able to move easily, I believe also builds trust. Examination tables at the Vets are often slick, and my pups are used to it, it's not frightening, and they also know in a minute a treat is on the way :). I also dry bathe the pups on the counter top, and do my own little exams-looking in mouths, inspecting eyes etc....and the compliments I receive is well worth the work. I enjoy it, and they do too :) :)
