A bob tail?..or something like that?

The breeder we got our rott from said Chyna was born with a bob tail..correct me if I'm wrong about the name..is this possible?..something about her mother or father..not too sure which exactly..had their tail like that..but not all of them were born like that he says..is this true?

I was actually wondering about that myself. I had been told before that only well bred rottweilers were born without tails. And that all others were poorly bred if they needed their tail to be docked. I don't know if it's possible or not to be born with a bob tail...but I don't think being with a normal tail points towards bad breeding like I was told.

Is your pup born with a short tail? This can happen, some Rotti-line do have it in their genetics.
As long as there has been a short there at birth you will have no problems with your dog, only if the dog is born totally without tail he can get spinach problems.
I had one puppy with short-tail (called Mutz-Schwanz here in germany) in my last litter. With five mont of age now the tail is short as a docked one. No health problems, but since Rottweilers are not docked anymore in germany the short tail is a disqualifying fault for showing and breeding.
If your Rotti has been docked you will recognize no difference to a puppy born with a long tail before docking. It seems, that you have got a serious breeder telling you how your puppy was born before docking, good sign.

Several of my pups were born with rather short tails - not nearly short enough to go undocked, though. I do not believe, though, that this makes them any more superior to others.

You're right Thomas. Rotties are supposed to have tails...then are docked to the (formerly) appropriate docked length.

What is the correct length. OUr girls looks smaller than most I see. It is maybe 1 inch long and it doesn't stick out at all. It is flush with the body.

Michael, I read here a long time ago that that is about right. I believe only one or two vertebrae should be left if I remember correctly. A little longer is Doberman length.

Really? Even though its natural? I didn't know that, but you'd think they'd make an exception. Do you happen to know their reasoning behind it?

I think dogs with not even 1 vertebra in the tail can have spinal and colon problems, like the Manx cats do.

Thomas,

Haben Sie wirklich Spinatprobleme gemeint?
