Jogging?

What is a good age for Julius (our 15 week old Rottie) to start jogging with us. I have heard anything from 8 months to two years because of his bones needing to mature first! Also, he loves his excercise,....how much is to much for him?

Sorry, I don't know how to post a thread for you, but I know they've discussed it in the archives. Maybe keyword is: running, jogging, or exercise?? :D

This is a very controversial subject. Do you have a contract from your breeder that spells this out (forced exercise)?

I have started my dogs as young as 8 months, but only after they have been xrayed (hips and elbows) to be sure all growth plates are closed. So far, all my dogs have passed OFA. I do supplement with Vitamin C (Ester C) and glucosamine/chondroitin to help the joints have their best chances, especially with the stress I put them through. However, I also know that my dogs are truly clear of dysplasia, and not simply masking it because it hasn't been allowed to be expressed.

Until he's older, work on multiple leash walks per day, build up those muscles. Take him to a hill and toss a ball or frisbee or something up the hill over and over......that will build up his rear legs very nicely. Above all, keep him light!! You should be able to easily feel his ribs. :)

Julius will know when he's had enough exercise. I've always been told that you should let the dog decide how much is enough when they are young and never to force them to exercise past their limit. As he gets older he will build up his endurance naturally.
