Comparison of German/American Rotts Hey! I haven't wrote a while here because I couldn't think of any really good questions- that I don't already know the answer to :D But here comes the question :p what are the differences between German and American Rotts? I heard that they are a little bulkier and things like that, but I don't really know. Are there really any big differences?

-------------------- First off I want to let you know I am not a breeder. I just brought my second Rott a male home a few weeks ago. To "me" American Rotts are very different, they are taller, lighter eyed, pink mouthed, more teddy bearish. In Germany they are very strict on breeding no back yard breeders, in there pedigree you get body measurments, character, type , condition, built. If we were as strict as the Germans we would have 60 to 70% less American Rotts. The biggest diference is all German born puppies have to keep their tails.

The only difference between a well-bred German Rottweiler and a well-bred American Rottweiler is the place of birth. Other than that, a Rottweiler should be bred up to the desired standards of the breed, as sanctioned by official entities such as ADRK and FCI. The point is, whether the Rottweiler is bred in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Spain, Mexico, Canada, or wherever, there is basically only one Rottweiler: the one that meet the established standards for the breed. However, since Europe banned the tail docking and ear cropping on dogs, an European Rottweiler nowadays comes with a tail. Therefore, the difference between American vs. German Rottweilers are founded on misconceptions and myths, mixed with "wives' tales" ;)

| Perfectly explained, German :D. I don't know how many times people have asked me, "Is that an American or German Rottweiler." They're also famous for thinking that "German" Rottweilers are superior. Maybe, with your permission, I can just print out your explanation and hand them the paper! It would be a whole lot less time frustrating and time consuming than going through this same spiel all the time.

Traci, Go ahead. Print it and disseminate the truth ;) The difference really is, that in the United States there are not strict breeding regulations as there are in Germany. Therefore, many dog owners with no clue about breeding do so at random and wantonly, thus ruining the desired standards of the Rottweiler, including the breed's true temperament and character. Nevertheless, we also have in the U.S.A. ethical reputable breeders that strive to preserve the breed's desired standards, thus creating some outstanding to superb lines of American Rottweilers... with German heritage, of course! Sadly enough, these ethical American breeders are a minority when compared with the greater numbers of backyard breeders... and there goes the breed down the sewer :( [ March 15, 2001: Message edited by: German Vanegas ]

This is one of my husbands favorite questions to answer! The other day while he was walking Sosa a man said,"Your dog has a big head, he must be German."Instead of going into the long correct respose that German Vanagas so nicely wrote(which should be published in every newspaper under the add for the "AKC registered German Rottweiler")My husband being the smart @$$ that he can be looked at him and said of coarse not, "He is Hawaiian!"
