Dog sleep duration

I like to sleep 8-9 hours a night. At what age can I expect my rott to sleep this long without a potty break? Or, will I always need to take her out at least once a night? Currently I can get her to sleep in 3 sessions with 2 potty breaks inbetween. 4 hours, 2 hours, and 2 hours. She is ready to take on the world by this 8th hour. Currently it seems that giving her 8 hours of sleep is a bit to long for her, as she whines a for a few minutes after getting out. So does anyone know a general rule of thumb for how long a rott can sleep at night with their owner in the room? TIA

Marley-9 week old rott

At our house, you'd best have a medical reason for making the humans get up!!!

What's her drinking schedule like in the evenings? Free water ends about 8 pm for ours, and right before bed if they want a sip or two they can have it, but that's it. Then just start stretching out the time. If you walk her and go to bed at 10, and she normally wakes about 2, then try to wait till 2:15-2:30 before you get up. And then either no water, or very little. I would think at her age she could be easily trained to only get up once in the night. You may have to live through a bit of whining for a few days though.

My guess is that she should sleep at least 6-8 hours by 3 months. My youngest dogs were on our schedule by 4-5 months.

Good luck!

Seems to me by ten weeks old, Cooper was sleeping through the night (though I sleep 6-7 hours a night.)
But those first few weeks - man. It felt like I was getting up about every 30 minutes to let him out!

I want to know the rule also...
This is what I've experienced..
I sleep 8 hours a night and my 9 mo rottie sleeps inside my bedroom.
I never limitted his water. He is free to drink as much as he wants. Before going to bed he has to have potty. When he was 3-4 mo I gave him 2 times potty between the bed time, 5-6 mo once between the bed time, but the periode is lengthen as he grows up. He could sleep 8 hours a night without potty breaks started when he was 7 mo.

I never got up during the night to let my pup out, had him from 9 wks old, he would be taken out about 11pm into the garden, always did what he had to, :)
then we were up at 6am had a few puddles etc for a few weeks but now he is just over 3 month sleeps any where between 6-8hrs with no accidents ...maybe im just lucky :D

My 9 month old will sleep 7-8 hours a night during the week which closely follows my sleep schedule.

He has also learned on the weekends to sleep in until I get up. Sometimes if I am not feeling well ( I have lupus ) I get up and let him out and then he goes back in his crate and I go back to bed. He pretty much has done this since he was 3 months old. I do limit water intake after 8pm unless we have class that night as class ends at 9pm.

I have a 4 month old female now and she is getting me up at least once a night still. Even with control of water intake after 8pm. I have found that a bit longer of play session or a bit longer of a walk about 30-60 minutes before bed time helps her sleep longer.

I think it may just depend on the dog and their maturity level. Give it some more time, your pup is still young. Remember to praise praise praise for potty outside and make the crate a happy place.

Good luck!!

Thanks for the replies everyone. It's hard to know when you say, I pull the water at 8 or 10, what you really mean by that. What time are you going to bed? Do you pull the water 1 or 2 hours before bedtime?

MMGY-I got away with just one potty break lastnight by just living through the whining. I always gave into the whining, thinking she might potty in the crate if I didn't get up.

Thanks again for the replies everyone.

There you go! Most dogs start whining way before they actually have to go, so at the very least you're teaching her how to let you know when she REALLY has to go.

On "school nights" we go to bed between 10 and 11. The water bowls(5 indoor dogs) don't get refilled after about 8:30. At bedtime, we put out a small amount, and limit each dog to a few sips, or sometimes we pass out ice cubes. It doesn't take them too long to figure it out.

I can tell you exactly what time of day each one of my dogs drinks the most.

Wow, just realised how well my pup Zak is doing reading all this, at just over 3 month, never took his water away, never got up during the night to let him out, never been any whining either, only had few accidents for few weeks.
Clean all day and night.......well done Zak :D

well my 6.5 week old puppy doesnt get her water taken away. I even leave it for her over night. Is this a bad idea? She pees once a night so far (on a blanket) .. maybe if i remove the water when she has to sleep? I'll try this.... but she wake me up around 4am and she goes then also.

aky, you have a very itty bitty baby, and it may be that she was a bit young to be taken from her mom, so I wouldn't be pressuring her to get potty trained through the night just yet. I think I would continue to keep water out just as you have for another week or two, and really get her routine figured out. Then when she's about 8-9 weeks you can start making changes to accommodate your schedule.

Also, as to your post in the other thread.....crates are definitely the way to go. And if she whines when it's not potty time, just ride it out. It will just take you and her a couple of days to settle in. Remember, she is very young, and misses her mom and littermates.
