| Just Some Advice Hi All: I actually put a message on another forum here about behavior if you want to look at that one. Anyways here goes my neighbor is moving and she had 2 Rotties one male one female the male 2 years old the female 10 months olds neither neutered or spayed. Well the female went into heat and she said that she don't think that they mated she took her into Petsmart but the person there said that she didn't see anything and that she would have to bring her back in the first part of February. Well she is moving away and she wanted to give up the female Rottie Mahogany is her name she is so precious and since I was going to adopt a Rotti soon anyway I said what better way that to get her she knows all basic commands and she seems to be very smart a little food aggression that we are working on. Right now she is walking around sniffing everything I take it getting use to the house. Anyway what bother me was that when I went over to visit with the Rotti she was tired up to this fence and the male was roaming as he please after talking with the owner she stated that she is hyper and I was saying that she may be that way because she is tired up to this fence and from what I have seen you never really exercised her she said that she does that because she is just ready to get rid of her she loves her male and she is not really good with female dogs I know that Mahogany felt the neglect that she was getting and so my family and I took her on to so her what real love is. Oh one more thing she also said that she stays out back day and night while the male is allowed in the house, what a life for my poor baby. Right now she is getting use to everything and everyone. We will be working on crate training here soon her original owners said that she hates to be confined I would guess so tired to a fence all day and then shuck in a room alone. Any advice on what from this point on will be appreciated. Oh she has been through obedience class which is the only plus I heard come out of her mouth. So any advice would be nice. And how do I tell if she is pregnant? I want to get her spayed asap. |

| Good for you for taking her. I don't mean to sound discouraging, but "been through obedience class" is pretty meaningless - unless the owner works with the dog on a daily basis, and stays in obedience for a couple of years, I wouldn't consider a dog's having been through obedience class as meaning anything much at all. Sign up for classes yourself as soon as you can. Take her to the vet right away. Most vets will spay even if the dog is pregnant, and you do NOT want a litter of backyard bred puppies to deal with. Finally, be gentle (but not too gentle, don't let her start questioning who's in charge), be patient, be consistent. Enjoy her and good luck! :) |

| Yay for you! Of course she's hyper...she's an active teenage dog who's been tied up and ignored, poor thing. I really can't add to what Spidey said, for sure get her to the vet asap. She might need shots & heartworm testing too, did you get any vet records from the previous owner? Yep, sign her up for basic obedience classes - they're inexpensive and fun, get yourself a copy of Rottweilers For Dummies, lay down some consistent, firm rules, and enjoy your new Rottweiler. :)

| :D Well hooray for you in taking the dear sweet little girl. Believe me, dogs respond quickly to love and don't be afraid to use the crate. She'll make the adjustment and "get over it" more quickly than you think! We had a Cocker with an aversion (we thought) to confinement as well. The trick is when you leave the house for a few hours and need to place her in a kennel, do it with a happy voice, "C'mom girl, kennel!" and give her a treat for entering. When you get home make a fuss. The love she'll find when you are home will soon outweigh the kennel altogether. Good luck! :D

| IF Mahogany is pregnant, but it is still very early in the pregnancy the litter can be aborted, if you choose to do so. How long ago was it that the original owner took her to PetsMart to be checked? If it's been a couple weeks get her to a vet as soon as you can and get her checked out. They will be able to tell if she pregnant or not by now. Jaime
