I saw my first Rottie many years ago when I was showing GSDs. I loved their look and their cool confident nature. A little over ten years ago I was dogless and my husband had recently died. My son decided we needed a Rottweiler and remembering those cool looking dogs I agreed. Of course, we were no longer showing GSDs and were not involved in the show scene, so what did we do? Called some back yard breeder in the paper, found what I considered to be a decent dam and some nice looking puppies and that was the beginning. But, to get back to the original question I would have to say their look!

I bet my reasons will differ from all of yours!

I got into Rotts after a friend convinced me that Rotts are the best dogs in the world for disabled folks. I know some of you will disagree, but i feel they are far superior to Golden Retrievers/Labs for several reasons, including:

1) Docked Tails....In 1980, my Labrador's tail got accidently caught in the spokes of my wheelchair at high speeds.... It was a terrible accident!....I've also heard of friends whose retreivers tails got caught in chair lifts, etc.....Can't happen with my tailess Rotts!

2) When you are low to the ground, the last thing you need is a wagging tail in your face all day.

3) The rott is strong enough to help pull up steep hills and help slow down steep hills.

4) Disabled folks look weak/vulnerable in the eyes of criminals....(I feel much safer with a rott beside me!)

5) I've also found that alot of dogs show aggression to disabled people....My rotts won't let a barking/growling dog get near me!

I think Rotts should be promoted as the ultimate service dog, not the golden retreiver!....Spread the word!

Happy New Year to All!

For many years I have always been fascinated with the breed. I think they are just so beautiful. My reasons are:

1.companionship
2.intelligence
3.determination
4.courage
5.strong-willed
6.lovable

My Delilah has all of these plus some.

The second reason I got Cain is because my beautiful son has a heart of gold. A man came into the pizza restaurant my son works in and wanted to sell a "Rottweiler" for $25. Eddie knew we would give him a good home, and also knew that chances were that some unqualified idiot would get the dog on impulse and then not be able to raise him. I knew NOTHING about Rottweilers, but had raised a Doberman for 10 years at that time so started the education process. So, did I "choose" a Rottweiler, no, but I'm glad he came into our lives.

I never had the desire to have a "rockweiller" I had my GSD's for so many years. My husband thought rotties were cool! A neighbor had a rottie who played with a bowling ball. When my husband retired and we moved to the boonies,my old Beau (GSD) came with us. After he passed on to the bridge...we missed a dog. A friend remembering Larry wanted a rott! Need I say anymore! Bravo became our first rott.He was a rescue and we lost him way too early. But today our Rotts are still our lives. Not JUST for the companionship. They have kept us active. My husband is 62..everyday with the dogs is exercise for him.I have enjoyed the training classes, the show ring. To us the rotties are much more than just companionship, they are family.

I was very impressed with a friends rott's loyalty to her family. I thought it was awesome the way she stood over "her" children. All the other reasons are a given.

She needed a home that would give her lots of love and attention. We were told she was a Rottie and would be a handful when bigger. At the time, we knew this: A sweet little dog needed the home full of love we could give her. Before this, I knew very little of the breed. This forum has been a godsend for us. Knowledge is the key. Cassie is a beautiful, loving, gentle dog.

I bought my Rotti because he was adorable, I certainly didn't buy my Westie for Security but she always barks just before someone approaches the door.

When I decided to buy my first dog, I had several claims to a dog, but the most important was a working dog. After I have practised with 3 Boxers in 14 years and always trained them in the Rottweiler Club, I was talk around to buy a Rottweiler and the reputation of the local club is re-established… now again, a Rottweiler is Club Champion.

My dogs have always been my best friends and shared my leisure time, my hobby and they have been centre of my best experiences.

My Rottweiler is with me, when I am doing the things I love most… so I have a Rottweiler for my sport.

my first, second, and third reason is Bruno, which was a friends rottie, he was the best dog I had ever seen, big, intimidating, and the biggest most full of love creature I had ever met, looks can be decieving.

Good question, German! For myself it started out with love of the breed (maybe I should say fascination). Simply put I leaped in without research and virtually no knowledge of what I was in for ! I was challenged in every way possible and being the personality I am rose to that challenge. That was 5 years ago and I am more in love with the breed today.

Today I would say I would choose a Rottie over any other breed for the following reasons (companionship being a given):

1. Versatility
2. Intelligence/intuitiveness
3. Courage
4. Loyalty
5. Humor
6. Lovingness
7. Beauty
8. Guard

These qualities are not in any order of preference. Lastly, they keep me active and young; alive in the moment and grateful I can share my life with such wonderful beings.

My brother had one that I loved then my wife and I decided to get a dog. We are planning to use amber for a therapy dog to work with speech impaired children. ( my wife is a speech language pathologist and uses any prop possible to inspire communication) so we went looking for a dog that was intelligent , gentle and tuff. we settled on a rott for intelligence and amber understands American sign language and knows about 10 signs well. gentle because of children and tuff, ( can handle anything a child would possibly do, ear pulling poking pushing etc..) we are working on condition for this such as ear pulling , playing with toes, and opening mouth and practicing no pressure biting. the second rott was a rescue and was obtained for the love of the breed and the hate of the dog having a bad home.

Why did I get my rottie? To save his life! I've always admired the breed, and understood the reasons behind the bad reputations. We weren't exactly ready for another dog, but we had been talking about getting Tornado a buddy, as he kept inviting every stray dog in the neighborhood to sleep on our deck! So, when I got a call about a lonely depressed puppy who wasn't eating and needed a home with playmates, I gave in and said, OK. I didn't get my puppy to show, or breed, or guard, or anything in particular. I can't complain if we never get him registered. He was given to me with the hope that the rest of my fur family could help save his life. But, now, I couldn't imagine life without him.
