I have two dogs and a cat in my house and have never had a pet odor problem. I use the plug-ins (now the oil ones) and also when I vacumn I use the carpet cleaner/freshener just for pet odors. Also in between bathing your dogs, sprinkling baking soda on them and brushing it thru their fur gets rid of odors and makes their coats really shine. My animals only go out to use the bathroom so they are in the house most of the time and so do not pick up outdoor odors as much as pets who go in and out frequently.

Thanks for the baking soda tip. That is surely miracle stuff. I use it once a week for a facial scrubb, with my shampoo to get hair spray residue out of my hair, in the washing machine, and so many other things. Now it is doggie deoderant. I would never have thought of that.

2 baths a week is way too much. If you are feeding a premium food, he should not need a bath but once every 2 or 3 months. We sprinkle carpet fresh on the carpet before we vacuum and it makes the house smell good. I know how you feel because I am a neat freak too. I have since learned to let some of that go. When you have a dog it makes it harder.

We actually found some doggie perfume spray, which is really strong scented called "four paws". I don't know if you have a Petsmart where you live, but it works pretty good. We are neat freaks too, but when our dog is outside more, we notice the odor. Also, the glade candles are very strong and can freshen up a whole room. They come in lots of great scents. :)

unsatuable:

Whether or not you're harming your dog by bathing him so often depends on what type of shampoo you use on him.

We typically have 3 dogs living in our house--2 of our own & a foster. I can't remember the last time either of our dogs had a bath with shampoo; our current foster had a bath the day we began fostering him because he was picked up as a stray & he smelled so bad it made me gag. Our dogs don't smell & our house doesn't smell of dog. Our girls sleep in our bed & are allowed on certain pieces of furniture.

All dog bedding gets washed once a week & the dogs are bladed at least once/day.

Maybe you just need to open the windows every once in awhile, even in the dead of winter, to air things out. If your house is super insulated, there's no easy way for old air to get out & new air to get in.

Of my four dogs, Cassie (9month old Rottie) is the only one that has a doggy smell when she gets wet. This smell doesn't bother me in the least. Of the other three dogs, my lab hasn't been bathed since last summer and doesn't smell at all. The only reason she was bathed then was because of something rotten she found out back. My Yorkies get a bath about every other month. Even with four dogs, the house doesn't smell like I have four dogs. We do however clean, dust, vacuum and mop regularly so maybe that helps!

Maybe it's not the dog's coat but his breath? I used to smell dog in my house too, which was a little disturbing since I had wood floors and a leather sofa, but I got Sheena (a previous rottie) some breath product from the pet store and not long after that I didn't smell the smell. Yes, her breath smelled like WET COAT. Maybe that would work.
