| How about your 2 cents on this... Here's the deal. A Back Yard Breeder has a litter of pups to sell. You go to the premises and see the Sire and Dam, both are attractive and well mannered and the pups are the same. The price is $200.00. Would you buy one? Hypothetically.... (been a little slim around here so I thought I'd stir the pot)

| Probably not. So much for a relaxing weekend at work.;) In the olden days I probably would have purchased a pup from them. Now days, I don't think I will ever purchase a pup from any breeder, BYB or "reputable". I will stick with rescues for now and maybe someday I may change my mind and buy from a reputabl;e breeder. I would steer clear of BYB's if no or miinimal health checks were done on the parents. The standard reply when questioning the parents health is usually " they have never had a problem with hips, elbows, eyes or heart so yes they are fine". Do you really have to stir up some muck? I should be working. |

| No and I would encourage anyone else to, if background is not a priority with them, to look at a rescue. I would also hope that these people end up with 8 unsold 10 month old pups eating them out of house and home and pooping 100 pounds a day. They will then think twice about repeating this activity. |

| No probably about it, NO I would not and anyone who cares about the breed wouldn't either.

| Yes, they do, often likening it to rescue. However, just as with training a dog, I believe you have to think about what you are rewarding. If you reward a behavior, you are likely to get more of it.................. |

| Nope. Nor will I even go into (much less spend any money in) any store that sells puppies or kittens.

| Even if they were nice pups with nice looking parents I wouldn't consider supporting that practice. No way! If we support BYB's then we are giving them a reason to continue breeding for the almighty dollar.

I have never "claimed" to have rescued mine from a BYB, But I did. Not knowing the things that I know now...... I saw an add in the paper called and did just what the opening post of this thread says, only the price was greater. NOW Would I ever do it again HELL NO! I ended up with a great dog but that is clearly not the point. I also will not support stores such as petland. After being on the forums and researching (after the fact) I have learned how sick both of these scum sucking types are.

Sansano, Don't be sorry you are right :) I didn't RESCUE a dog that was about to be euthanized or in an overcrowded shelter. I suppose that the term rescue should only be used in certain situations. I do however feel that I did save her from getting into the wrong hands. These people asked us no questions and even offered to take money off because the poor girl had a limp at 8 weeks due to OCD. They also offered to take her back if our vet check didn't pan out. We took one look at this chubby furry limpy baby and fell in love. We decided then and there that she was our "gimpy" Irie and that we would love her and keep her NO MATTER WHAT. After taking her to the vet and learning that she would outgrow the limp in her left paw and that it was due to OCD, I decided to call these folks back and let them know that there was nothing wrong with her that a little time and tlc wouldn't fix. Wouldn't you know they had caller ID ( I knew because that is how they responded to my call on the add in the first place) They never even picked up the phone. I atttempted for weeks to let these jerks know that there was nothing seriously wrong. A few weeks later I joined this forum and am blessed to have such good friends that have helped me in so many ways and where I have learned so much.

Teal'c is also the product of a BYB. He's from Tessa's first litter. We gave her dad the benefit of the doubt because he seemed to be firmly wedded to the idea that a bitch needs to have at least one litter to be "fulfilled". We'd argued with her dad that this wasn't necessary and it so happened that I met him the day after we sent Chakotay, B'Elana's younger brother (yes, we ended up rescuing another of Mrs BYB's dogs, but she's out of business now) to the Bridge and Tessa was days away from whelping. When Tessa went into labour, her dad screamed for help from us, and we, hurting from having sent Chakotay to the Bridge, helped out. Zeus and B'Elana were missing Chakotay so much that we decided that we'd adopt one of Tessa's puppies. Because we helped out with raising Tessa's litter we end up becoming closer to her dad, to the extent that he was giving me lifts to hospital appointments (I have aids). After worrying about a possible false pregnancy for several weeks, it was on the way to a hospital appointment that he told me how Tessa was actually pregnant. The whole story was set up that it was an "accidental" pregnancy... I immediately said that he should get Tessa to the vet's and that he might as well ask about having Tessa spayed at the same time as the abortion. Told him that John and I, knowing that money was short, had already decided to offer help towards having Tessa spayed. Long silence. I meet Tessa's dad and yes, she's definitely pregnant, don't know how many, and no he hasn't gone for an abortion. Puppies were due last weekend (just in time for xmas ) Last time (ok, I know, we were emotionally vulnerable etc) he got the benefit of the doubt. This time, no help. Since I learned that Tessa was definitely pregnant and that there was no abortion, whenever I've bumped into him (and he used to be a daily visitor) I've not alluded once to Tessa's pregnancy. Best guess is that the pups are now here. I desperately want to help out, but I feel that this is an instance where neglect is a positive thing... <frustration: innocent rottnkids versus "you just don't do this!"> |

| i almost bought from a byb. i'm so glad i didn't!! i talked about getting a dog for a while. i told my hubby if we got one, i'd want a rottie. then i heard insurance co's were not covering "vicious dogs"...rotties included, so i thought i'd never be able to own one. we were camping over the 4th of july this year and there was a lady with a beautiful female rottie. we talked. she said she was thinking of breeding her with her vet's rottie. i got her name and phone number and told her i'd call her in sept (that's when the dog would be in heat and when she'd breed her). she said she's sell the pups for about $300 but for me, she'd sell for $200. what a deal i thought!! but the more i thought about it, the more i didn't want to wait til jan. for these pups so i started looking thru the classifieds. my hubby bought me a magazine about rotts and i read about how important breeding was. i had also heard that you're not supposed to by dogs that are advertised in the paper. someone suggested i call the american rottweiler club. i found a local "branch" and spoke with a woman. she discouraged me from byb's and gave me the name of a well respected breeder. she told me i could expect to pay 800-1000 for a show quality pup (a little less for pet quaility)! there's NO WAY i'd be able to convince my hubby that a "pet" was worth that kind of money. so i called vet's offices, various trainers and emailed several kennels clubs to see if there were any pups available in the area. i got one reply for a pup for $2500!! WAY out of my price range. i was discouraged and was going to call one of the numbers listed in the paper and be done with it!! but something in my gut told me to call the breeder the woman at ARC recommended. i called and found out she had one little boy (15 weeks old). i originally wanted a female because i heard they were better for 1st time owners like myself, but thought i'd meet him anyway. i was concerned that he was a male and was older (i thought you were supposed to buy pups when they were younger so they could "bond" with you) so i called the woman from ARC to see what she thought. she had seen this puppy at several shows and said he was a great dog and that i wouldn't be disappointed. well, i met him a week later, fell in love, and bought him the next day. maverick came home with us the following week. i paid more that what i was planning for him but he was house trained and crate trained so the extra money was worth it! i've received many compliments on what a beautiful dog he his, how well mannered he is and what a great disposition he has. i have 2 children so having a dog that has a sound temperment is the utmost importance. he's doing great in obedience classes! god only knows what kind of dog i might have ended up with had i called one of those numbers listed in the paper or got one from that woman i met camping. i may have lucked out but i'm glad i didn't take the chance. sorry this was long, i just felt like sharing my story. |
