STATE OF LOUISIANA PROPOSES TO BAN OWNERSHIP OF MULTIPLE DOG BREEDS

Louisiana State Representative Robert R :Bobby Faucheux is the sponsor of HB 8, which is pending in the House Administration of Criminal Justice Committee.

The language of HB 8 makes it illegal to own, possess or harbor a dog that is considered a Pit Bull dog. According to HB 8 language, a Pit Bull dog is commonly referred to as a Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier, American Bulldog, or any other breed that possesses 1/4 of these breeds in its lineage.

The latter sentence is an ominous red flag for all dog owners of any breed or type in the state. There is no accurate scientific method to determine specific breeds of dogs. According to Webster's Dictionary, lineage means: "a group of individuals tracing descent from a common ancestor."

If passed, the wording of HB 8 could legally entitle the state of Louisiana to ban the ownership of many breeds and types of dogs. Although not specifically named in the proposed bill, popular dogs such as the Boxer, Boston Terrier, Bulldog, and many Mastiff-type dogs, as well as a host of rare breeds could also be banned.

HB 8 language will impact owners of mixed breed dogs. Essentially, any dog of stocky build with short hair or suspicious color pattern will be suspect.
Owners of dogs deemed illegal may be subject to a $500 fine, up to six months in jail or both.

It is critical that every dog owner, dog lover, and dog enthusiast in Louisiana and throughout the United States immediately contact the following members of the Louisiana House of Representatives, and voice strong opposition to HB 8. Residents of Louisiana should also contact their own State Representative and State Senator.

I live in Louisiana and this is news to me! Thanks for the heads up - I am going to compose my thoughts and write to each of these folks.

In fact, I might even write them about my dog alerting me to my neighbors break-in just the other night. I guess everything does happen for a reason.
