I have been through two really terrible fights in recent years and it was not fun. My son moved in with me for awhile and his male hated my male. I had one of those blonde moments and opened a door I shouldn't have. They immediately locked onto each other and I could not seperate them. I finally grabbed the collar of the more aggressive one and held him up with front feet off the ground until he kind of choked out and let go. I immediately told the other one to go to his crate which is in my bedroom and, thank God, he obeyed me. Took both to the vet and$700 later everyone recovered, although my guy still bares the scars. Second fight happened on my porch and I was able to push them into my pool and hold them under until they let go. Fortunately my daughter was there and she grabbed one while I grabbed the other. If you can seperate them before they actually lock onto each other it is much easier. It seems once one has ahold of the other it is almost impossible to get them apart

Thanks, Storm...I hope I never have to deal with more than two dogs at a time, your poor friend. How awful.

Carol - luckily no big vet bills here....I did get Cooper xrayed because he was limping. Luckily nothing broken, so he's mostly crated until it clears up, poor guy. I'm still amazed there wasn't more damage, and you're not kidding they're almost impossible to seperate when they're locked on to eachother! The big brass buckle on Coop's collar is bent though and Dutch has some abrasions around his ears. Cracking an oak chair over their heads was having absolutely no effect at all.

And my thumb is swollen & black & blue around the base, luckily it's not broken either. :)

DOG FIGHTS: Now that's something I should add to Workingdogs thread "Things that make you go EWWWWW!"

We've had our share and they seem to get worse each time... It's been about 2 years since the last (and hopefully it will be the last). A couple times my husband was alone and made a stupid mistake. Once he was able to choke them both out at the same time... We've tried the wheelbarrow approach and one I threw a glass of milk on the dogs (a lot of dumb good that did except make a mess in my kitchen)...

We have breaking sticks designed for PitBulls... don't know if they'd work on Rotts (never tried it and hopefully won't ever have to)...

Be safe everyone!

Yep - the dog has to side step with its front feet otherwise he’ll fall flat on his face. As long as you continue backing up in a circular circle motion, the dog cannot bite you because he won’t be able to twist to get his mouth by you.
