My rottie killed a mouse

There was a mouse in the basement and he killed it. Once he killed it, he left it alone, didn't knaw on it or anything. I'm concerned that he may contract something? He foamed at the mouth for a second or two and then stopped immediately. I checked him out, he appears to be fine, no problems at all. He is up to date with all shots. Can someone reassure me that this is okay?

I guess it's time to get a cat

Our dog foams at the mouth when she gets worked up over something. Sounds like you don't need a cat! Our girl killed a rabbit. She didn't attack it but she decided to use it as a soccer ball.

I don't think you have anything to worry about. Saydee catches moles and plays with them till they die. Lots of foam She has so much fun. When I first saw her doing this I was concerned . But then I realized she wasn't eating them.

My first Rottweiler, Imp, killed at least one mouse but didn't eat it. One of the Bassets ate it instead . My rescue girl Belle has killed and eaten at least 2 mice. Since she was a stray before I got here, who knows what all she was used to eating, so I'm not going to worry about a few mice. Of course, I don't have any poison out for mice so the dogs shouldn't be harmed by eating a mouse.

As long as the mouse was not poisoned or sick, it is nothing but good prey drive on your dog... had your dog eat it, it would have been a high protein natural meal

Good grief! Unless you are putting out poison for the mice and the dog gets it as a supplement, there should be no problem. I had one wonderful bitch that was a great mouser, kept the barn clean and also did away with most of the gophers. She lived to be 13 plus.

That said, I have always made it a point never to use poisons for varmit control. I will set traps, but not use poison.

We set our traps with peanut butter. Works like a charm. Mia has only ever caught one mouse and I didn't let her eat it, the kids next door grabbed it and scared their mom with it instead.

Brandy and the cat both do the mousing around here. Neither one eats them, which is good since I'd have no way of knowing if nieghbors were setting out poisons or not. Guess they both get enough food though cause they never eat any of those critters, just play with them. Up north they both catch not only mice but chipmunks too. Of course they have to be up on all their shots cause rodents can have some pretty nasty diseases. As for the "foaming at the mouth" welcome to rottie ownership. The slobber machine has only just begun.

I agree, I don't think you have anything to worry about as long as your dog is up to date with shots. My one Rottie, who is no longer with us, got scratched between the eyes by a groundhog. It attacked him and I was so upset, I was on the phone so fast with the Vet and he said not to worry. I put ointment on it and it healed and didn't even scar which was a miracle, anyway, sorry I got off the subject but everything was fine with that so your boy killing a mouse should be alright.

Thanks everyone for the responses, you really put my mind at ease. My boy was very proud of what he did and has been on the prowl in that area ever since. I must say that my mom has new admiration for my boy now! She's been bragging to family that not only is he sooooo smart, but he can catch mice too. She said she never heard of such a thing as a dog catching a mouse. After reading all these responses, I can see that Buddy is in good company

Thanks again!
