Lack of Undercoat

One of my fellow training club members made a comment about how my puppy has no undercoat. I had never really noticed. My 5 year old doesn't have much of one either (if any at all). Our other male does... Is it common to see such a variance in undercoats? Is it genetic to not see one at all or is it b/c of the climate we live in... It's been close to 100 since I brought the puppy home 3 months ago. If we moved to the winter climates would the no-undercoat dogs get a coat?

we don't expect to see body undercoat in warm climes. Dogs that have been imported with heavy undercoats lose them after a time in warmer parts of the country. Refer them to the standard:

Undercoat should be present on neck and thighs, but the amount is influenced by climatic conditions.

Thanks Judi... I should have referred myself to the standard to answer the question myself... and now that you mention it... the boys do have the undercoat around the neck and legs!!!
