Peeing in her crate?!?

We just realized Angel, who is 10 1/2 weeks, is doing this. We crate her at night and whenever she would whine, we always let her out. During the day she is crated no more than 3 hours at a time, that is rare. Usually it's an hour or so, and we always let her out before we crate her.

What should we do about this? The crate is SMALL, she is almost outgrown it, and I can't imagine how she can stand to do this. No, she is not a pet store pup ... so I am confused.

Thanks for advice!

Sarah

Hi Miss Jorgy :)

Dogs do not like to mess their beds, are you actually seeing her pee when you take her out? Once she has had an accident in the crate, you have to make sure to get all the odor out of her bedding, too, or she's likely to think that's the spot (and then it'll really confuse her)!

Here's a link to a really good set of guidelines for potty training:

FIRST have her checked to make sure she does not have a urinary tract infection. These are amazingly common in female pups

Second some pups simply cannot have any bedding in their crates during the housebreaking stage. It just makes them want to pee. I had one pup here once that peed in his crate every single night until he was oh maybe 14 weeks old- and yes he was taken out at 11 pm, 2 and 4 am. He just had no bladder capacity

Third be sure you do not have water in her crate and she is not given any water after 7 pm. Water in the am should be restricted as well to no more than a few sips if she is to be rated during the day while you work. When you are going to be home for more than 2 hours she gets to drink all she wants to as long as it is before 7 pm. Also no food left in crate either

Sarah,

I won't repeat what others have said - it's good advice whether your pup came from the best breeder in the world or a pet store.

However, I would like to comment on what you said above. The crate should be big enough for her to stand up and turn around in. If she can't stand, get a bigger crate.
