What treats?

When I get my pup, I'll feed healthy treats only. Use them for training, since rotts are food motivated.

For adult dogs, an occasional marrow bone or knuckle bone should work well. It also helps to clean your dogs teeth. :)

I only use treats for training/working so they are not devalued.

Dumb me - I answered a question that wasn't asked! Well, the kind of treat should depend upon how it is used. For a training treat it should be something soft that is quickly swallowed without chewing or crumbs dropping as that slows down the flow of the training. I make liver brownies, use string cheese in the individual packets or those little meatballs that come from the freezer department at the discount stores. All can be broken down into thumbnail size pieces or used to jackpot for a terrific job.

I only use treats for training too...hot dogs cut into teeny pieces work fine. Beef liver or beef heart can be parboiled, then baked until it's chewy & chopped into little bits...cheese, almonds, popcorn...sprinkle garlic powder on any of these, most dogs love garlic, even on popcorn!
I don't use store bought treats. For in between chewing (good for the teeth & gums - she'll need something to chew especially when teething) I use raw beef ribs or beef necks.

When I am going to have a training session I use rollover because it is a good quality treat, although some of the flavors tend to crumble. When wego to class, sometimes I just take some of dinner along and switch off between that and rollover for really good work. That way he doesn't get too fat! (not like he doesn't burn it off tearing around the yard after his ball)
