Sneezing (another curiosity question)

Boy I hope I don't kill a cat with all this curiosity :D

Do your babies sneeze when they get excited? He sneezes when we are about to go outside or play. No other time so I know he is not sick.

Sneezing and bowing are part of a dog's "I'm playing" vocabulary.

When I want to romp with my dogs, I bounce my hands down on the ground and make sneezy noises at them and they respond in kind.

So all of your dogs sneeze when playing...hmmm...could this be why Elsa is always sneezing in my face??!!! Rarely does a nice belly rub from me go unpunished .

Now I will know that she is blowing puppy snot on me because belly rubs make her happy happy!!

Moose Sneezes only when he lays on his back to get a belly rub ( or just to lay there) It just seems funny because it really is only when he lays on his back.

The sneezing after being on their back is because mucus is running backwards down their nose. It tickles something to cause a sneeze, and a face full of doggie snot if you're too close.

You know, I had kind of wondered about that! Mine tend to sneeze when they're on their backs too. Nothing like getting a faceful of Rottie snot sprayed in the face! :D

Could you guys point me in the direction where you learned sneezing as part of a lets play vocabulary.

There is a condition called reversed sneezing which is brought on in many dogs different ways and one is when they are excited but it isnt a communication of lets play. I would be interested in reading anything you may have on this as being a communication amoung dogs.

It's to late to go back and edit but I wanted to rephrase what I was asking. I know it has been in books and documented as play but I was asking where you heard or read it so I could look at it. The reason is because I have a hard time believing that it is communication.

Or I guess I should say a volunteered communication among dogs. I am also concerned that many do this at or around their dog to stimulate play because they think their dogs see it as that. If your dogs have reverse sneezing you could be aggravating a condition by getting him or her excited enough they sneeze back.

Really it's just food for thought....;)

This is only a small thought... could we compare this to a small baby/toddler, who coughs to get attention... my niece used to do that, like she was choking just to get attention... would a dog do the same, kind of like using sneezing to clear their throat so to speak??????

Well, hmmm, I know with my Thunder it's not just on his back, he mostly does it AFTER I put my shoes on (signal: mommy is going out: oh boy oh boy, I get to go with) then he sneezes and stretches. (limbering up, I'm assuming)

His sneezes mostly come after a signal from us, daily routine stuff, like going out, or playing. But we don't do it on purpose to get him TO sneeze, and he doesn't sneeze to get US to play. Maybe the excitement of something fun about to happen "tickles" their fancy and they sneeze.

I'm by all means not an expert, that's why I asked this question.

Our dog knows the "speak" command, but often times he will sneeze 10 times before he'll actually get a bark out. Other times he can be in a dead sleep, hear something and get up letting out a full roar. I had been wondering what the problem was with the the "speak" or barking on command vs. on his own. I'll have to work on the "sneeze" command I guess!

My dogs play with bared teeth and lots of noise. Every couple of minutes one will sneeze and the other will immediately follow. I'm sure it's the position of those curled back lips and wrinkled up noses that gets 'em going.
