What did you forget to puppy-prooof?

We are bringing our new Rottie puppy home 1 week from saturday (December 23). It will be a fun Christmas.

[*]What did you forget to puppy-prooof?
[*]What was the first thing the lovable little monster-puppy destroyed?
[/list]
We expect it to be lots of fun, but we want to learn from everyone else's experiences and mistakes

Thanks
marc

Hello Marc!

I can't put the present's under the tree until Christmas because the dogs dig thru them and chew on them etc.. The tree - well your baby will be pretty small (I assume) so not to many worries - but our Linda now 6 mos naturally could not deferentiate between the tree inside our living room and the trees outside, she started to chew on it but now is used to it being there. Cords for lights are a HUGE attraction to little puppies! so be careful with them. Also Poinsettas are very very poisonous. On a lighter note - when you open gifts it can be fun for the puppy to play with the wrappings ( or frightful if it is very young and too much excitement going on)

New years is a bad night for all of our babies - the firecrackers make them crazy - so on New Years we spend the night with 6 dogs in bed with us LOL Steph

Cords, cords, cords! There is some kind of magnetic force between a cord and a puppy mouth This will be Max's first Christmas so I have been thinking about this a lot. Watch out for the little ornament hooks, glass balls, all paper products will be destroyed Max would steal books and chew them, any paper left around. It's a little easier when they are so small because they can't reach much, that changes quickly! Max cleaned every corner of the living room on a daily basis, dust, lint, bugs you name it Good luck with your new baby, Christmas will indeed be a fun one!

First Rottie puppy ate the back of a couch (cus everyone thought she was sleeping in her puppy pen....she wasn't.... ), chewed the corner of a coffee table (absent minded type single crunch), ripped a tablecloth off the table and took off on a run with it and between me getting it back and her thinking this was a great game it was destroyed....thinking she was quietly lying under the dining table sleeping we later found that she had quietly taken the corner off of some of the chair cushions.....big sigh....she was my destructo dog.
All cords are taped to the walls....with her we needed to add tabasco paste on top of the tape.....
Last 3 Rotts have been angels....no major catastrophes......our house is puppy proofed to the max (makes for a very tidy looking house, nothing on low tables, shoes/clothes in closets/etc.) and no one takes their eyes off of a loose pup....you develop eyes in the back of your head and ears that can hear the slightest change in activity....

I can't say enough about the wonders of TOILET PAPER!
Roxy, my 5 month old has developed a nasty fetish for it. It is her favorite decorating medium. lol
And, as stated above, cords. I bought some bitter apple spray and it has done wonders.
It is non-toxic and you can use it on shoes, house plants, cords, etc.
Good luck with your puppy and give us an update when you get it him/her home.

Jake's curiosity of the bathroom hasn't seemed to go away. If I forget to keep the door closed, you can bet the toilet paper will be shredded and he will come trotting out with the toilet brush in his mouth (like a big bone)....after he gets a few slurps of toilet water (I've stopped using deoderizer pucks for his safety)!....yuck

Pride-and-joy,
LOL, LOL, what is the attraction with the toilet brush! Max loved it so much that my boyfriend bought him one for a toy! Although it is put away when company comes over He loves to chew on the bristle part, never destroys it but I think he likes how it feels. Silly dogs!

Ah! The toilet brush. Deiter's favorite flavor!! Carries the nasty thing around as if it were a trophy. He finds things we haven't seen in two years!! He really makes me look like a bad house keeper!! LMAO

Hey, great Christmas gift idea! Why spend $30.00 on more Kongs and rawhides when I can just buy him his OWN toilet brush at the dollar store

The first thing I forgot to puppy proof was the Christmas tree. Jas took off with the garland down the hallway.

I just thought of another thing. If you have cats, don't be surprized if the Rott'n one has a fettish for litter box "treats."

I try to keep an eye on Jake and have repositioned the boxes, but occasionally he still gets into it. He'll come over to me with litter sand stuck to his wet nose acting like he didn't do anything. Kinda like the kid with chocolate all over their face saying, "No, I wasn't in the candy jar...I promise "

Cain chewed on the corners of the walls. Try to figure out how to keep him away from the corners of the walls. They're really hard to fix after they are chewed up.

Just like Kids!! We gave our 8 month old niece one of her Christmas presents early and she liked the bow on the package more than the present.

Anything in a gift bag strongly resembles dog food in a bowl. White tissue paper is a dead ringer for tissues and toilet paper.

This year I insisted that my daughter only put non-glass ornaments on the tree. I should have said inedible. Gypsy wants to chew both the wooden and the crocheted ornaments.

AND, rats I forgot, I had my son move my huge jade plant in from the garage since it was supposed to be near zero. I completely forgot how much destruction Gypsy did to it last spring when she was teething. Today she simply picked up where she left off. I found large pieces of plant in front of the Christmas tree.

ANYTHING plastic is also game. Gypsy loves hair clips. 2 days ago she chewed on a grain-of-wheat replacement light bulb--yes broke the glass.
