| Christmas Present!!!! Well...I finally decided on a breeder and the litter is expected to be arriving October 19th...or around that time. That puts my baby in my arms around the week before Christmas! I've given the deposit, and have started reading even more! I can't stop wanting to know more about the breed that I have loved as a child. Now there is alot more involved than just a dog to play with, since now there are no parents to take care of her. It's all going to be my job, and I'm going to be the best owner there is. (or Pack leader ;)) I do however know there are going to be plenty of questions, and thats why I'm here. What would be a good size crate for a female rottie? I was thinking 42LX28WX32H? Good or bad? Anyone have a ideas of other things I should get before my baby gets home, aside fromthe normal, bowls, food, brush, collar and leash? I can't wait!!!! Christmas isn't coming fast enough this year! |

| Oops...forgot something I wanted to add a link to the website with all of the mother and fathers information to see what everyone thinks. I'd like any thought about them as well, there are links to the dogs individually, that have other pics! Isn't Enno absolutly Stunning!!!!! Puppies are exciting but please don't post breeder websites. You can "spread the word" via PM please. Last edited by Major; 09-30-2002 at 07:13 PM. |

| That is the crate size I have for my female Rottie. She is almost 24 inches high and about 85 lbs. As for other things to fill the time between now and then, I would suggest: 1)you start looking around and interviewing trainers. 2)if you don't have a vet already, check out the ones in your area. 3)if you work during the day, make arrangements for a dog walker or puppy daycare. 4)read some books on the breed. Some recommended ones are The Complete Rottweiler, The Ultimate Rottweiler, Rottweilers for Dummies. I would also recommend a general dog care book like Good Owners, Great Pets. And congratulations on your fuzzy bundle of joy!

| Now I realy feel good!!!! Thanks for the reply. I actually bought and finished The Complete Rottweiler, and The Rottweiler's for Dummies books! I told you, I just cant get enough. The wife seems to think I'm going overboard and borderline obsessed with this wanting to be the perfect owner. Any way, As for the training, the breeder is going to provide a free 6 week obedience course. As for the vet thing.....good idea, I'm searching now! The walker thing is all me!!!! I work 3 miles from home, so I'll be dieing for lunch time to go home and let my girl out to play and do her business. Thanks! Did you get a chance to see the parents!!! I love it!@ |

| Congratulations and boy are you lucky! :D Not only are you lucky enough to live in the 'Burgh with my Steelers (thank GOD they won yesterday.... Myron Cope would have had a stroke in the booth if they blew it again) but you're ALSO veeeeery close to one of the best trainers on the planet.Look up the Sullivan School of Dog Obedience (I want to say McKeesport...but it might be West Mifflin?) Gert Sullivan and her staff are exceptionally good with working breeds and is one of the founder of the North American Police Work Dog Association. Can't say enough about her :) Hey.....no tinsel on the tree this year....lol :D

| Workindogz, does the obedience school you recommended have a website by any chance? If so, would you please post it? I would like to read training articles they might have on the site, as well as books they recommend. Thank you.

| Congrats! I actually know a little about Enno, and my breeder must've just sold him to your breeder!!!! What a coincidence! If the puppy I want turns out to be show quality, will be comming home the first part of November!! I know how the excitement feels! I've been waiting forever! :D Enno has extreme working drive and tons of temperament. He's stable in the head and very outgoing and friendly. So I imagine the puppies will be GREAT for Schutzhund Work! But I don't really know anything about the mother. Looks like a great pedigree! They're nice looking dogs, too! :) You're doing the right thing by researching the breed and reading all you can! That's the most important thing you should be doing right now. I think finding a great trainer is also a good idea. Also, do you have a fenced in yard? If not, you might want to consider getting it fenced. I would recomment a private, 6 foot tall fence. You don't absolutely have to have this, but it makes it nice and safe for the dog. The parents of my hopeful up and comming pup: "Umbro van het Polderbos" and "Ursa vom Wachberg." | I wasn't able to find a site using the Sullivan School name.....but there is contact information on the NAPWDA site that I'm sure would help if you're interested. I did however find a really neat site with a ton of articles (some written by Gert) This site really caught my eye! Lots and lots of information on training and behavior! http://hattrick-dals.home.att.net/Training.html

| WorkinDogz, thanks again for taking the time to search the web and especially for the site you posted. It DOES look like a great resource. I must say that I had searched the Net for the Sullivan school on my own, as soon as you mentioned it, but came up with sites that didn't seem like they would be the right one.

| Is it December yet??? I have waited for 17years....so I guess another couple of months shouldnt be that bad...expect it's proving to really be difficult to wait! Anyone have a time machine I can borrow. Thanks for the link WorkinDogz, I love the reading and will be on the site till I've read it all. I'll also be looking to contact the trainer mentioned. A side note...I sure hope the win for the steelers has woken them up from the horrible slump they were in. RottnLove, it's a small world isn't it!. I don't have the fence in yet....I'm leveling the back yard since it's a bit hilly, and the fence is going in next spring. He is so awesome. It's actually a very cool story about the day we(my wife and I) met him. My wife has never owned a dog, and WAS very nervous about owning a rottie. She was always making comments that I wanted to flip over, "What if she gets mad and bites my arm off?", "What if I tell her to do something and she attacks me?"...BLA BLA BLA. I always had to tell her to stop putting a pup that hasn't even been born yet in the mix with the poor untrained dogs that she see's on the news. I always make sure I say poor dog or untrained. I don't want her to think dogs just get mean for no reason, but it's all about the way you raise the dog. So, any way. We go to met Enno and Efi, and the breeder to. :) The wife was a nervous wreck!!! She was so worried that the dogs were just going to attack her or use for as a new chew toy around the kennel. Well, Efi hurt her leg and the poor thing had the big cone around her head, so needless to she she wasnt in the greatest of moods. I pet her for a bit, but you could tell she just wanted the cone head look to go away, and to lay down. Then it was time for Enno!!!! I would say he's a good 120lbs givce or take a few pounds. Jeff, the breeder, brings him out from the kennel...It took all I had not to just run over and want to pet him to death!!! He is such a magnificant looking dog. Well, Enno comes strolling over to the wife and I and Just sits right in front of us. Jeff says "it's ok." So I reach down and pet him....he loved it, but had his eye on the wife. I tell her to pet him, with the slowest and most shy reach my wife goes in for the touch...Enno raises his head to meet her hand and she gets nervous and pulls away. Jeff tells her it's ok....he just wants to smell you. So she tries again. That was it.....! She starts petting him and he forgets all about me back there scratching his back. He moves closer to the wife and sits right on her feet. She keeps petting him and I can see that my wife now has an entirely different look in her eye. Enno then drops down and rolls over on his back exposing his belly....The wife just looks at me, and then says to Enno, I dont know what that means....When she says this it's almost like he completely understood what she said. So he starts rubbing his back on the ground but, moving himself closer to my wife. Jeff says, he wants you to scratch his belly. My wife kneels down and scratches his belly, at that point I think the wife and Enno both connected. Enno gets up and plants this HUGE kiss on her face. Now of course that was something the wife wasnt to thrilled about...but she dealt with it! When it was time to leave and put Enno back I thought the wife was actually going to cry! Sort of touching actually! She even commented saying, could we take him home!? Well, when we left we had to actually head to Maryland, an eight hour drive. Which turned out to be a ride with nothing but the wife going crazy over the fact that Enno was AWESOME!! She said she couldnt believe that she was nervous, "He was so massive, but the gentleness he had was so nice!" The wifes comment. That was all it took. The wife is now a born again dog lover! She's even started to defend the rotts when people make comments about, "arent you worried about him attacking you, those are mean dogs, or you better make sure you are never alone with him". Mostly people that just have no stinking clue!!!! Well, sorry for the long winded story! I just love it though. Here I was trying to figure out how to break the wife of this fear she had about the breed, and all it took was this massive, gorgeous, stunning rottie to win her over and show her what a rottie is all about! I'm sure there will be plenty of stories, about the new pup's things, and the things the wife says and does. *Humm....I'm thinking I better get a website started for this* Thanks |

| Patton_jr I'm SO glad your visit with the breeder went well! It sounds like you've waited a lot longer than I for a Rottweiler. They're an incredible breed, aren't they? I know why your wife fell for Enno, that wasn't surprising at all! He's beautiful! :D I'm becomming very interested in the sport of Schutzhund and I hope my dog will be a good canidate for it. I'll probably look into it, but of course, I need to focus on the training. Obedience school for at least 2-3 years! :D I really wish my breeder was close by, cause I think he's an awesome trainer as well! I don't know of many trainers around here that are as good as he. :( Let's stay in touch! I'm excited for you! I know it seems like an eternity before December, but it'll be here. Then you'll be BUSY, BUSY, BUSY!!!! :D ![]() Lisa |
