Unusual Markings

Hello all - I have been reading up on all of you for about three months now and have finally decided it was time I joined in on all the fun.

I have a three month old rott that I bought from a breeder in Michigan (I am from Ohio). He has got a tan line around the base of his neck (above the tan across his chest) and it looks like he is wearing a necklace. He also has a some brown on the inside of his ears and some brown showing through on the outside of them as well. I've been in contact with my breeder and she says it's all undercoat and it will disappear over time. It just really has me baffled. I would hate to have paid so MUCH money for a pure bred that doesn't look like one. I have all of his papers and his ancestors backgrounds and they are stellar and he had a price tag to match. So are these markings in fact just undercoat or something else.

Your insights in this matter would be greatly appreciated.

RottMom2 - Did you buy your pup as a show, or pet-quality pup? I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong, but I'm certain that the undercoat shouldn't show through the outer coat. There should be strong definition between the rust/mahogany markings, and the black coat. And those markings should only make up 10% of the body color. The 'necklace' marking around the neck sounds like a 'fault' to me. But these things don't matter if you don't plan on showing in Conformation.
Would you have a pic you could post of your pup? Perhaps if we
could see him, we could better answer your questions. Best wishes to you and your new boy!

He's only 12 weeks old....

He still has his puppy coat. My Pooh had the reddish brown on the outside of her ears as a pup, and it's gone now. Let him grow up a bit, then question his coloring, if it appears abnormal to you.

Regards - e

NO it is not undercoat. It is called a double mark

In 10 litters I've only had this occur in one litter but almost every pup had it. They did outgrow 99% of the double mark (necklace) by a year old. Some pups totally lost the necklace and other kept a few tan hairs

In the German style show ring (USRC, ARV etc) the judges fault this and the critique will say "double mark" or something similar

This is clearly visible at a week old, if not younger

PS tan inside the ear is normal. Tan on the backs of the ears goes away when they shed their puppy coat

My girl is of course not show quality, but she will be three at the end of the year....(plus she was rescued so I don't know her background) but she STILL has the brown on the backs of both ears, and her undercoat is also white in certain areas, mixed with black... (deep down)

I know she's a purebred, but not "standard" , ;)

Yes, you can see the undercoat during shedding. It's most visable on the outter sides of the neck. If you show when your dog is blowing his or her coat, it will be noted on the critique, most likely.

Undercoat in a rott can be black, grey or rust. All three colors of undercoat can be found on the same dog

Thanks to everyone who replied to my post. It means a lot to me to know that there are so many of you out there who are dedicated to the breed.

As far as as the necklace is concerned, it just showed up a week and a half ago. I have pictures of him when I first got him and pictures of him now and it was like it showed up over night. I did buy him as a companion dog and had no intentions of showing him. I had just had my nine year old male, Ivan, put down June 29, 2002 and found out he was FULL of Cancer. When I took his food back to the vet, I saw a picture of a Rott on the cover of Dog Fancy Magazine and decided I was going to do it all over again and started seriously looking. That's how I got my Kato. I got him from a breeder in Michigan and he came from a really big litter (11 pups). So the breeder basically just set aside some for show and some for companion. The ones she chose for show were slightly larger but not by much and the rest really were about the same, except in demeanor. He's got a wonderful disposition, really laid back which was what I wanted so I wouldn't trade him for nothing. It's just that I paid a LOT of money for him, $800 to be exact, and I don't want to wind up with a dog that looks like a mut.

I'm only a junior member, so I'm not sure if I can post any pictures. I would love for you all to see him. If you can tell me how to set that whole thing up, I would really appreciate it. Any other comments are obviously welcome as well.

Thanks so much!

Tracy

Tracy - the most careful of breedings can result in puppies unsuitable for show or future breeding - it doesn't mean they're "mutts." :) IMHO, very few Rotties one sees in general are really show quality - my other two are rescues, definitely not show quality, definitely 100% Rottweiler!
I have a male - Cooper - from very, very nice lines - he is long haired and people always ask "what he's mixed with." Underneath that shaggy coat he is 100% Rottweiler, and I love him to bits! I bought him as pet quality as it was clear by 5 weeks old that he was going to be "incorrect" in his coat. He has a limited registration (cannot be shown in conformation or bred) which is fine since I just wanted a Good Dog.
FWIW, he also had lots of black sooty markings on his legs. When he shed his puppy coat at about 10 months old, they disappeared & he has very clear markings now.
