Eye Color

At what age does a puppy 'settle' into their eye color. Or, is my 4 month old's eyes going to change color? She's not as dark as I'd like, but she's not too light either.

She (and her eyes) can be seen at

Thanks...

I don't know the answer to your question, but she is a beautiful puppy. I like the lighter eyes, they are very striking.

In my opinion, I would have to say they seem a bit light for my liking. However, if you believe they aren't what you prefer, if you know someone that has an eye chart, it couldn't hurt to pull it up and find for yourself if it is of better preference or not.
Some breeders will have these eye charts, and possibly some clubs.

In some of your pup's pictures, her eyes appear darker than some. Maybe someone here who has more experience of telling eye color could help.

:)

I think you are pretty much going to stay with what she has right now. We have seen some of our older dog's eyes turn a bit darker but that was after they were over five years old. I think she will stay with the medium eye for most of her life.

She is cute! Looks like a real go-getter!

I agree with the above posters. She'll probably keep her medium brown eye color. So what if her eyes are considered a little light! She's TOO cute!!!! :D Remember, no Rottweiler is perfect, but she's almost perfect, in my opinion! ;)

Hi Laurie,

I used to think whatever the eye color was at that age - that's what it would stay. Then I saw a bitch who as a youth (about 8mo or so) had 3a eye color. Saw her again about a year later and the eye was significantly darker! Since then, I've seen several dogs from this line who have also had eyes darken with age. So, I tend to reserve comment on the eye color until the dog is 18mo or so as it seems to differ from line to line.

On a side note, when I went to look at your pups eyes, I noticed one of the pups in that litter didn't have it's tail docked, yet the rest did. Is she being shown in Europe or something?

Yes, the one w/ a tail is in Germany. She will be a pet, but still requires that the tail is not docked. Out of the 5 females in the litter the breeder had to make a decision at day 2-3 which one was going to be the 'pet'... now that had to be tough. In the end it turned out that all the females were quite nice for Schutzhund, but little tail was definetly not the pick Schutzhund pup...

Thanks everyone for your comments about eye color. I've seen lighter eyes come from these lines (might be the bitch from a previous litter w/ no relation to my puppy). I hope Maddie's eyes get darker, but if they don't I'll love her no less...

Now for the next question... will her tail get shorter :)

Laurie,

Some feel that you can darken eye color slightly by feeding Norwegian Kelp. Not saying I agree, just passing it along. I don't think she'll ever have a 1A/B eye color, but I suspect that's not what you love about her either. ;)

On another note, looks like her ears are starting to fly, I'm guessing teething is either started or right around the corner. Get on those ears now, massage them, and you should have no problems. Looks like she's got a nice sized ear, so hopefully you won't have to be constantly after them. :)

Gretchen,
I've heard that you can 'darken' by supplementing... I too am not so sure about that. I've also heard the same thing for mouth pigmentation.

As for her ears... They have gone back and forth between flying and looking good. We've been massaging and yes she is teething (and that's when it was the worst). It's been about a month since the latest pictures on the site and her ears are currently looking nice (but big!). Just last weekend they were flying and now they aren't... it's driving me crazy. I'm hoping that I don't have to tape them.

How are your pups doing?

Does anyone know of any eye charts on-line... I realize they may not be as accurate as the real thing... but I'm curious to learn more about it.

There used to be an online chart, though I have no idea what site it was on. I just remember that someone sent me a JPG picture from it (which I no longer have). Maybe do a search on "online Rottweiler eye chart" or something similar.

The pups are doing wonderfully, all have settled in very nicely with their owners, and seem to be progressing quite well. :)

I looked at the eye chart from Lauren and concluded that Maddie was a 3A/3B. Today I was at her breeder's and saw a real eye chart and her eyes are a 2A/2B.... YEAH!!! Much better than the 3 category. Her eyes in the pictures seem lighter than what they look like now....

Thanks everyone for your input.
