Anyone not use a crate anymore?

My wife is on me about taking the crate out of the living room. We haven't used it in almost 1 year. Sasha does fine by herself whenever we go out. So I am thinking of just taking it apart and putting it in the garage. I have a travel kennel I can use in emergencies. Anyone else have this happen?

If you don't use it and Sasha doesn't go into it on her own (ever), then I can see removing it. If Sasha does still use it as her retreat, I would try to keep it out (if not in the middle of the room). ;)

yeah, Sasha never went in there on her own. She has her own full size bed (only furniture she can get on) in the compute room that she uses. Only time she ever went in is when I told her too and had a treat in my hand. :)

Sounds to me like it is time to dismantle it. Unless you are thinking about another pup. Now that might be a plan ???

No more pups !! We are about to put new carpet in the house. It went through allot when Sash was a pup. Between potty training and a muddy back yard (which is now sodded), the carpet is awful looking. It has red clay stains and I think I have steam cleaned it 100 times !! Does anyone have a dog and Burber carpet?

Michael-- Makita hated the crate last year when I brought her home. (She had been hit by a car and required three more weeks of cage and leash restriction).... I used it twice... I literally had to push her in there...I can't say I blame her because she was in one for three weeks at the animal hospital, and it wasn't always so roomy...:(

On day two, we came back in in the middle of the nite from a potty break, and she took one look at me, as if to say, look, there is no way I am going in that crate! (and it was in a nice way) she laid on her blanket, and never moved.... that was my rule, as long as she never moved and stayed on it, or the couch cushion, she was free to be out of it... I don't care what they say, some dogs absolutely HATE it... and do not see it as a comfort area, den type deal...

The only way I would use one now is for a puppy.

I do believe they are essential for that...even for an adult dog that can't be trusted, I would keep them in a certain room...( and that doesn't sound like the case at all with you )

So pack it up... :)

Berber carpet and dogs

I don't have it myself but know two people with dogs that do and both have had problems. My aunt has berber in her bedroom and has a dachsund(sp?) and her nails will snag the carpet and once berber snags it pulls it across the entire room. Other friend had berber in their living/dining room and has two huskies, same problem only much worse. She would have to have carpet guys come out and fix the snags about once a month at $60 a trip. Not sure if they have improved berber, both these carpets were installed 5-6 years ago. Both say they will never go with berber again.

Thanks, that was my main concern with Berber carpet. I think it might be best to go with a normal carpet.

I have 16 dogs and the only one who is not consistantly crated at night or when unsupervised is the nearly 11 year old with terminal bladder cancer.

If hubby is sleeping on the couch (the living room is much cooler-not because he is banned from the bedroom:) ) then the 2 year old Staff Bull X APBT mix sleeps loose. Mainly because he curls up on your feet or between your legs and never moves an inch

LOL nope! The dogs have a huge room with their crates in it with an attached fenced yard.

Only 2-3 at a time are ever in the human portion of the house. No dogs allowed in the bedroom since Darla died

I wish that I could pack up Iries crate. We TRY every now and again to keep her out for short periods...ie while reunning to the market or doing work in the yard. She usually does fine and I imagine just sleeps the whole time. The other day I went on a walk. I was only gone 40 minutes and she had figured out how to unzip the chair cushion and had a pc of the stuffing hanging out of her mouth when I walked in.

She has lost the freedom for a while. She is GROUNDED! LOL. I say ditch the crate if you don't ever use it. I agree with your wife. They are big and bulky and don't make for nice decor in a living room. Iries is in the spare bedroom and out of the way. I can see why she wants it gone if it is not being used.

I took it apart today and it's in the garage. Will put it in the attack soon. Now she (my wife) want's her eliptical machine in the living room so she can watch tv. It looks worse than the crate did in my opinion. Women.
