Looking for adding another one

I have a wonderful rescue named Thunder that I was blessed with in March. Now I am considering rescuing another one. Thunder is between 3-5 years old (they were not exactly sure at the rescue place)

I was wondering (other than the cost) on how should I go about this.

Should I take Thunder to meet the other dogs that I will consider to see how they get along?

I guess my concern is how the two will live together.

When I do get another rescue is it possible to change their name? (I want to call the second one Lightning)

Thanks for your help:)

If you go thru a rescue or not, your best bet is to take Thunder along to meet your possible addition. Make sure the dog(s) you meet get along with Thunder.

If the current dog in the house is dominant, adding another dominant dog probably won't work....but adding a submissive one probably would. You want to match personalities but try to avoid conflict (hard to describe that one :)) . If Thunder is active, you'd want an active dog - not a marshmallow:). Most folks would recommend getting a dog of the opposite sex of what you currently have...I agree with that :)

YES, it's possible to change the name....after all, when the dogs come into rescue, we don't know their names :)...we pick something that suits them....you can change the name to whatever you think suits the dog :D

Has Thunder been thru basic obedience? If not, I'd recommend doing that first....since Thunder has been with you 6 months, that's a good interval before adding another dog - gives both you and Thunder time to bond with each other.

Good luck! Please keep us posted!

BTW - LOVE the idea of having Thunder & Lightning! I've always wanted to name a pair of dogs Peanut Butter & Jelly myself!! I'm very food motivated <LOL>!!

Maybe the people more involved in rescue can give you a hand with the specifics.. but I believe that it is a good idea to take Thunder to meet the candidate to see if they get along.. I also sugest, if your boy is bossy, to get a girl.. but that depends entirely on Thunder´s personality..

I love the idea of the names Thunder and Lightning :D :D

Good luck :D
