my baby leaped from my jeep

:(

hello to everyone!

i don't know how to start with this but id rather have it as a reminder to all of us regarding our beloved breed and for all kinds as well...

my father and my sister, just last night, took my 4-month old baby to the vet for worms. afterwhich, on the way home, my baby suddenly jumped from our jeep while the car was running 30-40 kilometers per hour!!! :(

it was a terrible site! :(

they went back to the vet and found no fractures but today, we havent seen our baby stood up though he is already smiling!

now, aside from this carrying the nature of a reminder, i would like to hear from you guys(console would be the right word, i guess) any comments on recovery and stuff.

I AM REALLY BOTHERED AND SO SAD ABOUT THE INCIDENT!!!

i am currently thinking about wolverine and how the members of the canine world cope well with all kinds of injuries....

just wanted to hear anything from you guys...even if you would scold me :o for being unmindful of my baby but then again it was really unexpected for him to make a hole on the canvass-part of my jeep.

next time - seatbelts are a must!!!

hope to hear from you guys!

I take my guys in my heep all the time, without any roof on (when it's not to hot), or with the roof on and the back windows removed. I use a harness on both of them and put d rings (the type climbers use with the one side that has the spring clip) on the chest part of the harness. Then I run a short lead from the harness to the floor of the jeep where I have mounted another d ring to the seat belt attachment point. Just clip the lead to the d ring and they are secured, makes it easy fro them to get in and out of the jeep, becuase you simply need to unclip one d ring. I never have the back seat in my heep, so this allows both of them to be free to move about the back, but they are both securly attached to the floor so they cannot, jump/fall out.

If you want even more detail, lemme know.

I hope your furkid is OK, and please make sure that he is allways fastened in, even if it's only for a ride around the block.

They sell truck harness straps (not the correct name) that are used in the back of a pickup truck. I bought one years ago for Blaise and then hooked it up to his harness (never the collar). It is designed for dogs...

A crate is even better!

Good luck w/ recovery... give the little one extra loving.

Dogs should be secured in any truck, jeep, or car. I don't care how well trained you think your dogs are, you never know when you may have to veer the car to avoid something, of if someone runs into you. Accidents happen, that is why you need to secure the dogs.

Geez, what a horrible thing to happen. :(

You got some great suggestions how to keep your dog safer on rides. I'm a firm believer in dog safetly belts.

Please let us know how your dog is doing and I'm glad to hear there were no fractures...let's hope he makes a full recovery soon!

THANKS A LOT GUYS!!!

thanks a lot guys for your reply!

my little tyke is doing just fine! :D :D :D

but i guess he's still nursing the right rear leg. he still can't touch the floor with that leg but as to behavior - he's raring to go running again(but i intend to let him off the leash for a few weeks more)

im really counting hard on what my vet said him having no fractures. this should assure me that that leg will be just fine!

yup guys, i sure will practice strictly dog safety with cars!

again, thanks a lot and more power to us all!!!

One outfit that sells these travel harnesses is Drs. Foster and Smith (their website is drsfostersmith.com).

I cannot agree more with the replies you received. Even if the car is totally enclosed, it's still a good idea to have the dog(s) restrained; that would prevent their getting projected forward and hurt in case of a collision with another vehicle.

When my boy was about 7 or 8 monts old he jumped out of our pickup to confront a dog that had left its owners' lawn and was chasing our truck. Our speed was only about 35 mph, on a small street behind our house (with, thankfully, not much traffic). I almost went berserk, fearing he got hurt. Thank goodness, he wasn't hurt. That was a hard way for him to learn NOT to ever jump out of the pickup, no matter what.

His dad immediately installed a string which attaches with a hook to his collar on one end, and to the middle point of the pickup cab, right under the window. The string is short enough where he can move a little left and right, but there is no way he could jump out. The string will completely prevent him from doing that.

They are like little children, and the wisest thing we can do is anticipate danger and take all the precautionary measures we can. I am relieved to hear your baby wasn't badly hurt and that he is fast recovering.

Just an additional note.

I see you have a soft top jeep like mine. I don't know if you off-road it like I do, but here is something I do when I do go off-road.

I put Aussie in the front seat, with the seat layed back as far as it will go. (not a lot of room for him, I know) Then I attach his leash to the roll bar ABOVE and BEHIND the seat. I do this by wrapping the leash around the bar, and using D clips (the ones climbers use) to attach the leash. I also make sure that the leash has been shortened so it won't allow him to jump out the window or get in my way when driving. Then I simply attach the leash to the ring on his harness and off we go. Most of my off-roading is at a maximum speed of about 2-4 mph, so, this works out very well for him.

just an update

my baby will be undergoing an operation on his right rear leg(he had a fracture when had him xrayed)

just wanted to hear your opinions guys if it would at all affect his mating capability.

i forgot the exact name of the operation but he will be inserted with a metal rod - 6 inch in length i think...im going to get the details and will hit you guys back.

im counting on my vet's experience and same goes with his number of times he did these kinds of operations. but still would want to hear your opinions if a dog who had been operated would have no problems with growth or maybe change in temperament.

this is my first time in all of my babies to undergo such a thing and well it was all my fault but then alls here might as well fight it out.

my apologies for this post which is kind off unsequenced or something like that... :o

would more than love to hear all your opinions...

addendum

the operation is "bone pinning"

had some opinions from several vets, since my baby is only 5 month old, there will be problems with growth either to operate or not. i am so sad. :( :( :(

I feel sorrow for your situation, and deeply wish there was something I could do to change what's happened. I can only encourage you to take heart in the knowledge of the depth of love your pup will have from you for the rest of his life. And that's regardless of whether he will be able to be a sire or not.
