| Fleas I found these recipes in a newsletter and thought I would share them with you..... I have not tried them yet...... FLEA REPELLENT FOR PETS Mix together 10 drops pennyroyal, 10 drops eucalyptus, 10 drops cedarwood, and 9 drops citronella. DO NOT put directly on fur. Instead, put it on a rope collar or bandana and tie it around your dog or cat's neck. FLEA REPELLENT FOR CARPETS Add to a 1 pound box of baking soda 3 drops pennyroyal, 3 drops eucalyptus, 3 drops cedarwood oil and 9 drops of citronella. Sprinkle over the carpets and let it sit for one hour before vacuuming. |

| Keep in mind that on a big dog, from the collar to the butt is a long way for a deterant to be effective. We have so many excellent products available now, that if I had a flea problem, I'd probably vote for one of them. |

| Judi, the post was meant for people who do not really want the chemicals in their home that are in regualr products...... I wish it were not true that a lot of those products are harmful, while getting rid of the problem. I encourage anyone that is interested in what might be in your home to pull up the product in your web browser and look for an MSDS sheet on it. Almost all of your household cleaning products have MSDS sheets, and they are indees interesting, providing that they do not HAVE to tell us what the dangers are. I am sure that insect repellents and Sprays are the same. Myself, I sprinkle borax on my floors to kill flea eggs.....I have no time to go get those ingredients listed above! call me over the top.....or nuts even, but I worry about the effects of things I use in my home, expecially with my pets. Wish I had known more when my kids were little, I just thought if you cleaned house, more is better, and if It was clean it was safe....... :( |

| I am blessed with living in a no flea area. (lucky me). The couple of times we've had exposure has been when the California dogs visit for trials and then I simply bath the heck out of the dogs and treat the premises but not the dogs. I've always used the 120 day carpet spray which catches the larve and pupua not just the hopping kids. I do use boric acid for roaches and crickets and it works well. With fleas because of the tapes they carry, I want a quicker knock down. I know it is a trade off. |

| Rottmommie, Just because something is "herbal" or "All Natural" does not mean its non-toxic. Citronella and Pennyroyal are both poisonous, and the Pennyroyal is an abortive to boot. Just some food for thought. JG

| Of course all herbal or natural products have limitations....that is why the recipe includes the statement do not put directly ON the dog. One has to read up on ANYHTING they introduce to their environment.......you will find me in agreement..... |

| I guess you'd have to tie a bow around the nubbie, too! :D I use a flea comb and a container of soapy water to get those god-forsaken little blood suckers! If Luna has one flea on her, she lets me know and this year I've only found 2 fleas! That's without any deterrant but an occasional bath and a flea comb. Many years ago, I had a horrible flea problem and found an enzyme product that I sprinkled all over the yard and kept moist. Then it went to town gobbling up the flea larvae in the soil. I guess it worked! :) When I was a kid, my dad used to make collars out of eucalyptus pods for our dogs as a flea deterrant. Judging by the number of flea bites I got, I don't think it did a darn thing. |

| okay now i have heard this more than once. what's the deal with frontline or other products like that? how harmful are they? i use biospot on dungeon. have seen two fleas on him from the time i took him home until almost 9 months later, now. it works. is it harming him? it's way cheaper than frontline. i buy a 3 month pack of it for $9. he will not be reproducing so it can't affect any puppies. will it harm him when he gets older? i'm about to get another puppy and was advised not to apply chemicals to the dog. what else can i do. i currently don't have a flea or tick problem and i don't want one either.

| Use for crappy flea collars No one wants to use those crappy Sergents Flea Collars anymore - but they do have a role! Put them in your vaccum bag. :D Fleas, eggs, pupae and larve get sucked up into your vaccum. There they grow and hatch in their little warm, dry environment - safely away from all of your sprays and such. In the little enclosed environment, where they can't get away, the collar is very effective. Being as cheap as they are, you just throw it away when you empty your vaccum bag. ;) So you or your pets never have to touch it but can still reap the benefits! Cheap, effective and safe - you can't beat that! :)

| I have used something similar on my dogs. The difference is that I put the essential oils in a base of walnut oil. I applied directly to the dog. My two older dogs didn't mind, but my younger one didn't like that stuff on him- he acted like I was killing him. He does seem to be more skin senitive then the others. I was using it not so much for fleas but for ticks. Big warning here. Most of those oils are toxic and deadly to cats and birds.
