payment question

Is it common to give a non-refundable deposit for a puppie when they havent even been born?

I was just curious to figure out why someone would pay for something they havent seen? If this is common practice than fine, I just wondered why?

My thought is you dont buy a car unless you see it and even test drive it. So why would you give money for a puppie that isnt even born yet?

A deposit can be in order, but completely non-refundable? Well, perhaps non-refundable for this litter from this breeding at this time. In other words, specify that the deposit is for a breeding between xxx sire and xxx female for xx sex puppy to be whelped approximately such and such a date. Should the specified puppy not be available at at the specified time, the deposit MUST be returned. Otherwise I've heard of people still waiting two years later for the promised litter. Or, litter happens, you want a male, there is only one male and breeder decides to keep it and tells you you'll get one from the "next" breeding. Hummm, Get everything clearly in writing. Don't neglect the in writing part. If the breeder cannot agree with this, keep looking.

I don't know if this will help any but.....

Leaving a reputable breeder a deposit toward a planned breeding is in my opinion the only way to go. But, make sure you agree with the contract and terms before giving your deposit! Read over it with a fine tooth comb. Usually with a reputable breeder there's a wait for a puppy and it usually holds your place in line for a pup from a particular planned breeding.

Hope that helps! :)

Thanks!

I think that answers my question. My biggest concern was more with the fact that I'm looking to get a female. If there is no female, can I get my money back? So, as long as it's in the contract I'm ok....I guess I should have thought of that myself.

Thanks again...

I'm sure I'll have many more questions!

I say you always read the fine print

you have to both agree on the contract, and if you know this person is a good reputable breeder, and it depends on what the contract says, how much the deposit is going to be, will the bitch take on the first breeding, I have done myself done a deposit on a pup before they were bore only because I knew the breeder and I had a contact and I knew what It said and so on, so I myself was protected, and I have not regretted it I have a beautiful daughter who grew up and never had any problems, but the most important thing is to make sure you know what you are doing and what you are signing, one part of the contract I signed was stated that my daughter was to be free of all deaseses and no health or heart problems or any genetic or hereditary health problems, from the parents sire XXXX dam XXX
so it worked for me the way I wanted it..
good luck and best wishes to you

Any deposit you leave should be (at some point) refundable. In our contracts, we cover it as follows ( I have cut and pasted from our pet contract - we hvae the same basic wording on our show potential contract):

****A deposit (half the price of the puppy) is suggested. If Seller does not have a pet quality puppy of the sex you want, your full deposit is refunded. If you decide anytime before the puppies are five weeks of age that you want your deposit back, it is fully refunded. 50% of the deposit will be refunded between the ages of 5 - 7 weeks. If, at 7 weeks of age (when we do the temperament testing and critique the litter to determine who is show potential and who is pet quality), we have a puppy that fits your requirements and you decide at that time not to purchase, your deposit is non-refundable.*****

Hope this helps,

Sharon

My breeder required a deposit. If we changed our mind for whatever reason, that deposit was forfeited.

I think that is more than fair.
