This is not surprising at all unfortunately. If you want to read more on the subject check out the book by Ann Martin (Food Pets Die For)Here

I am glad I was made aware of this fact by my vet sometime ago... I don't feed kibble at all any more... I always advice my adopters - if they are going to feed kibble - feed holistic - at least they made a committment to use only human grade products.

Thanks for that book reference, I will purchase it - its good to have information available.

I find it very disturbing that dog food companies would put other dead dogs in dog food, I mean thats just plain nasty. Isn't that some what like doggy cannibalism or something. When I first heard about it my Uncle told me, I couldn't believe it, I thought he was lying until somebodyelse told me the same thing and I read the article just now for myself. Now I feel like the bond between a pet owner and their vet is some what shaky because I assume that the vets are not telling people what is happening to their deceased pets after euthanasia.

It makes me wonder what would people do next just to make money. ( they would probably try to put other humans in our food.) lol...Just a thought...I hope.:(

One of the reasons we went to the barf diet almost a year ago.
I can feed my humans, I think I can manage to feed the dogs too.

I read about this in Goldsteins book 'The nature of animal healing' shortly after Kaptain was diagnosed with cancer. He also had some pretty scarey thoughts on the dangers of vaccinations. Kaptain had home-cooked meals for his last 3 months and any other animals I get will be fed on a BARF diet. I wish the article had gone more in depth about why lamb and rice is unhealthy, as this is what I always fed my dogs before.

ABSOLUTELY.... that is the reason I changed to BARF... my vet told me to stop feeding kibble - he explained why - after that there was NO question after that...

Feeding my dogs BARF is just like feeding kids a meal, persoanlly I see no hardship in putting forth that extra effort to ensure our pets, who we love and many of us see as our "children" get the best of what is available. we KNOW there are probably some drawbacks in feeding RAW - possible bacteria/parasites, all of which can be avoided if we handle and prepare the meat right - but NOTHING in compares to the health risks they are exposed to after constantly feeding kibble which is highly contaminated by poisons dead carcasses ground up to make dog food.

I think there should be some legislation which makes dog food companies accountable with severe penalties - the quicker the government realises that animals have a right to be taken care of by humans the better - it makes me soooo mad

... what makes me even more mad - is when I speak to friends of mine who say they LOVE AND ADORE their dog/cats - but feeding BARF is too much effort... give me a break!

I LOVE AND ADORE my dogs and cats and I don't feed them BARF. Just because someone feeds there animals a certain way doesn't relate to how much they "love and adore" them. From your statement I would gather that BARFers love and adore their pets more than kibble feeders like myself... give me a break .

I am sure we all love our pets to different degrees... personally I would go to any lenghts to try and provide my dogs with the best nourishment available.....knowing what I know about commercial kibble... I am glad I was made aware of the alternatives.. ;)

Are you telling me that Wellness, Canidae, etc. are not providing nutirtionally sound diets? You may want to know a little more about commercial kibble before making that claim. I would go as far as saying that foods like those provide my dogs with the best nourishment available. Not as "varied" a diet as BARF but still nutritionally sound, balanced, and very nourishing.

"knowing what I know about commercial kibble... I am glad I was made aware of the alternatives"

Ditto. After feeding barf...I can't see how dry processed packaged kibble can be anywhere near as good as fresh.
When my Axel was sick and on pred for awhile the vet advised he will be very thirsty. Because he ate a raw diet with alot of natural juices and water, he showed no sign of extra thirst. When she advised me to take him off this diet (in an effort to find the cause of his problems), his water intake went way up.
True kibble is alot easier and MANY a dog has done just fine on it & lived a long life.
I think it's a matter of personal choice. Much like there are many breast fed human babies & bottle babies. Both methods work.

And neither method "says" you love your dog (or baby ;) ) more or less than someone else, which is the reason for my original post. I'm all for people that use BARF but, don't tell me I don't love my animals, or am not willing to give them my efforts, just because I don't BARF. There is so much more to a caring for a dog than its diet.

joquendo, it isn't as if he feeds Ol Roy or anything. Those who prefer kibble and take the time to choose a good quailty food ( as good as kibble can get), then that is their choice.
Kibble will never compare to barf for me or you. That is our choice.
I know Bruce loves and takes good care of his dogs. I wish he lived near me. :D
I bottle fed one child and breast fed the other. That doesn't mean I loved one child more than the other.

Yes, that's why I feed my dogs Wellness because it is a good diet. But, since I don't spend my time preparing their food I must not "love and adore" them as much as you "love and adore" your dogs . I just spend my time interacting with them, not making their food. My poor dogs, good thing they don't know it $ucks being with me ;) .

Teena, thank you for your kind comments, at least you understand my point.
