Numbers & Letters????What???

Just curious as to what all the letters and numbers are when it comes to classification? Is there a website that someone can point me to to learn more about these symbols, or what ever you call them?

I'm doing my homework inorder to make sure the pup I find will be the dog for me. Going to be a 1st time owner.

for example... Multi-V1 16x V-Rated???? What ???

Thanks in advance,
Jim

It depends on what you are looking for in a dog.

If looking for a pet only, try adopting from rescue. If looking for an obedience prospect and not conformation or breeding, try rescue.

If looking for a breeding prospect or comformation dog, the breeder is the way to go. Many breeders sell 'pet quality' dogs but there are so many more rotts already in this world looking for homes that are 'pet quality'.

Many friends of mine have adopted from a rescue and have gotten obedience titles on their dogs. I adopted my Ben from NERR a little over 2 yrs ago, and he and I are hoping to get more 'letters' after his name this fall. He rec'd his CGC spring 2001, and in the fall of 2001, he and I became a certified Therapy Dog & Handler team.

Rescue is full of great dogs waiting for homes, as are may shelters...if all you want is a pet, go that route unless the titles & letters/numbers after the names mean that much to you.

You can find a 8 week old puppy at a rescue? The numbers and letters don't mean anything to me right now. Thats the reason for the post. I guess I was assuming that a breeder would know more about the line. I want a dog that has history of good health, and temperment. I just figured that a breeder would be better for this case.

Here is a link to all the AKC titles. You can click on prefix or suffix titles to see what they are.

http://www.akc.org/dic/events/titles.cfm

I'll do some more research to find a link for the german titles (V-1, SchH, etc.) for you and post it in a bit.

Hope this helps,

Here is the link to the ARV website:

http://www.arv.org/

If you go to the "What Is?" link on their site, it will explain the various german titles.

Again,hope this helps you out.
