Microchip or Tatoo??

Hi ....I want to have my 1 year old rott either microchipped or tatooed, just in case he was ever to get lost or anything, I want to be sure I took every measure to have him returned to me.

What would you suggest, should I microchip or tatoo?

Thanks...;)

It seems that these days that microchip is the way to go if the dog ends up in the shelter system... a tattoo may be overlooked?

It's easier to register a microchip than a tattoo... must common folk wouldn't know where to go to find out what the tattoo meant... that's my opinion, ironically all three of our dogs are tattooed, not chipped!!!

Our girl was microchipped right at the animal control when I adopted her... they register it nationwide, and it caused no pain when they did it... I don't know anything about tatoo's...

All of my dogs, and the dogs in our rescue are microchipped. It is a simple procedure and it is much easier to scan a dog that it is to look for a tattoo.

Sable was microchipped at her breeders
Digbee we microchipped after we rescued him, and my brother's Gulliver was microchipped at the shelter before he could bring him home. It's safe and easy, and there's a national registry. Perhaps do both if you consider travel abroad?

In Mexico, if you register your dog with the FCM (the mexican equivalent of the AKC) the dog is tatooed and microchiped... my girl has a tatoo in the inner right leg and a microchip.. but I believe that a microchip is more easy to check.. I don't think that people are wlling to lift an unknown rottie's leg to look for a tatoo

Hi everyone...Thanks for your suggestions, so it seems as though microchipping is the way to go...:D , I don't really travel all that much so I don't think I need to do both, i think just the microchip + his ID tags will be enough .
Thanks agian for helping me to make my decision ...;)

WHAT IS THE COST OF CHIPPING?
I would like to get this done, but how would a vet or anyone KNOW to scan for a chip in a dog?
I mean, if he is missing, how do you contact enough folks to actually SCAN the dog?
has anyone ever had a chipped dog returned to them?
I like to know the success rates for things before I actually try them, call me a skeptic, but how would a vet or anyone else for that matter KNOW if they should scan, is it done routinely?

Sajan was microchipped at his breeder. I think that is a much better way to go. My mother has an older Rott that was tatooed by the breeder and now it is not readable. My breeder charged $25.00 for the chip.

I don't know how much it costs to microchip a dog in the US, so I can't answer that one.. but someone here in the forums said that all shelters and rescue organizations in the US have the dogs checked for a microchip first thing, is part of the routine

My dog has a small plate on his collar that says he´s chipped and what model of chip reader to use.

Brodie had a chip implanted by the shelter we adopted him from. The collar that they gave us with him has a plastic tag that says he is chipped by Avid and they also put a regular tag on the collar that says "Help, I'm lost" and it has the name and number of the shelter and Brodie's case number while he was in their care. I thought that was very cool.

Depending on your vet, the cost to microchip (AVID) is approx. $30.00. You then have an additional fee to pay when you actually register the dog with the chip company. Avid has various cost programs available.
Anymore, it is just about second nature for any vet, animal control, or animal shelter to scan for a chip when a dog comes in. Doesn't matter if the dog comes in as a stray, or as an owner relinquish. Most facilities now have universal scanners that can scan for any type of chip at one time. We even had a case where a dog had been missing for over 6 months. The person who had found the dog, decided to just keep and not notify anyone. That same person eventually took the dog to a vet for vaccinations, and when telling the vet his story about how he got the dog, the vet became suspicious. He had the dog taken into the back and scanned. Low and behold there was our microchip and we were notified.
We have been microchipping our rescue dogs for years, and during that time we have had no less than 10 returned to us because of the microchip. Just getting one back makes the program successful.

I have my dogs microchipped with the Home Again chip and registered with the AKC Companion Animal Recovery (CAR) database. I think it was $25 for the chip at the vet and then another $15 to register them in the database.
