stopping puppy from urinating in crate

can some of you tell me what are some of the ways to teach a puppy not to pee in the crate? i have used the method that i have always use and with this dog its just not working to well. the dog is 7mo old and i have it in a small crate it can stand fully up at the shoulders but not its head, when the dog becomes excited it will squat in the crate also,i have not gotten mad at the dog when it does go nor have i caught it in the act maybe once or twice but when i did i said no and took it outside but things have not changed and now its getting to the point were i'm considering selling the dog because of this problem.

What sort of schedule do you have your puppy on? Do you take your puppy out for "business" before you put him in the crate? Do you take him out for "business" after you take him out? How long are you leaving him in there? Is this happening at a particular time of day? If its random, at what times are you picking up water/food? How much room does your puppy have in its crate? Enough to turn around and sleep comfortably? If its too big, you will have problems - too small and its uncomfortable.

There are many great resources on the internet for crate training. I would suggest you look them over and come up with a schedule for your pup. Dogs are creatures of habit. Put them on a schedule and they will love you for it. Keep their bladder as empty as possible. This does not mean to cut off their water but to frequently take your pup out at certain times and under certain conditions.

PS. Sounds to me that you just need to keep this pups bladder empty as much as possible and get him used to a schedule.

All of the above, plus make sure you are cleaning the area with a pet odor neutralizer and not an ammonia based product. Ammonia smells too much like the dogs urine, and the dog will continue to go in that spot.

How long do you wait between times when this pup can go outside and go, some dogs need to go out more often than others, maybe your dog has a smaller bladder, have you discussed this problem with your vet, have you tried smaller increments of time so that the pup does not go in his crate. It doesn't seem that you are very dedicated to this dog by your statement "that your considering selling him". Every dog is different and has different needs and sometimes ajustments are required in training to get the desired end result. Just my opinion.

If you have any kind of bedding or blanket in the crate take it out. Allow your dog ample time outside before crating. My young male at 7 mos would not pee all in the same spot...he likes to spread it around so allow them time to do that. Also the crate is too small. Your pup should be able to stand up comfortably, that includes being able to raise his head. Restrict water the hour before putting him in the crate and don't leave him in there as long. More potty breaks:)
