Adopting My 1st Rott. Hi Everyone! I've checked out this forum a few times and finally I decided to join. Anyway, I'm adopting a 2 yr. old male Rottweiler/Shepherd mix this Sat. from SmileyDogRescue.org. His info. can be seen on this link: http://www.smileydogrescue.org/bluew...ils.asp?id=156 I'm excited because this will be my 1st dog. The home visit w/ him and the foster parent went well on Tues. So, I just wanted to share the good news w/ everyone here. Please feel free to share any positive (and even negative) comments re: mix breeds, males vs. females, behavior, etc. Your comments and support are appreciated! -Michael.

mcbaes72: Congrats on the new addition! I second K-9Girl on getting you and your boy into obedience classes. The trainer doesn't train your dog--he or she trains you to train your dog. Going to class is especially important for you, seeing this is your first dog. Taking the time now to go to class, learning how to train your dog and correct your dog, will reap you immeasurable benefits in the future. Not the least of which is that you'll have a certificate attesting to the fact your dog went to obedience class. You never know when such a document will come in handy. Best of luck! We hope you'll share your experiences with us.

He is a beautiful boy, and I love those eyes! I agree with the others, obedience training is the key and everything else should fall into place. You now have a great place to come for advice from seasoned owners. I don't know what I would have done without it!

Birdie'sMom, K-9Girl, AngelBunny & austin: Thanks everyone for the replies! I appreciate the compliments and words of wisdom re: the importance of obedience training. Birdie'sMom: Last Sunday, when my wife and I attended a dog-adoption event, she practically fell in love w/ him the moment we saw him. I agree, his eyes give him a unique character and that's kinda neat. K-9Girl: Okay, I'll look into obedience training very soon. So far, he knows "sit" and "lay down". So, I'll continue to work w/ him on new commands and, of course, play w/ him, too. I'll be sure to post some pics here once he settles in our house. Also, all week my wife and I threw different names out there and we finally decided on "Tazz" (aka Freedom). We'll also keep the old name that the rescue org. gave him. AngelBunny: Yes, I see the importance of obedience training. I guess it does train me to train the dog better. I'll look into it. Do you recommend attending an obedience class w/ other dogs or a home trainer? I haven't decided yet which one. But I do look forward to training him and all three of us (my wife, me & Tazz) becoming one big happy family (since we have no kids yet). austin: I agree w/ you, I like his eyes. When we saw him both times (at the dog-adoption event and the home visit), the first thing you notice is his blue eye. It's a real attention-getter. Yeah, I've been to this forum a few times and I enjoyed reading the different posts/topics. So, now that I'm a member, I'll definitely post any ?'s here to get expert advice from seasoned pros. -Michael.
