Controlling Jealousy? So we've had Roxie for about 3.5 weeks now and she's starting to get settled in. One problem we're having though is jealousy or excitibility. If I hug my fiancee or put my arm around her while sitting on the couch Roxie goes nuts. She wants to be on our laps if we're sitting, or she jumps up on us if we're standing. I tell her "No!" and put her into a down position, but she'll jump right back up and want to be the middle of attention. If we stop hugging or sitting close, Roxie will go laydown where she usually lays. I know it will take time to condition her, but can anyone recommend a good way we can repeatedly use to correct her and keep her calm? Thanks in advance! Jacob

When I was growing up, my mom raised pomeranians. She had a lovely male that she showed in obedience. She used a six foot web leash and a choker to teach a long down. After you down the dog, put the leash under your foot so that if the dog gets up there is an INSTANT correction. You don't have to yell down and reach to make it. I use this on Oliver when he won't settle down in the evenings. It usually doesn't take much and he is done "argueing" with me and is settled in for the evening.

We just had a discussion about exactly this issue a short time ago. You might want to check the archives. Look under "help with jealousy" under the behavior forum.
