| Our First Rottie! We need some advice! Hello! We are new to Rottweiler.net and the Rottie world! We pick up our newest member of the family, our first Rottie puppy at 8 1/2 weeks on June 1st. She is a girl. We are so excited we can hardly wait! We have read several books and have contacted some local trainers. We were hoping to find out what advice you have for the first time Rottie owner and advice on integrating her with our current pet, a 6 year old Standard Schnauzer. We welcome any advice you might have for us...puppy to adult! Thanks so much! :D |

| Welcome to the boards! I would recommend reading the Idiots guide to Rottweilers as it is very informational. (hate the idiot title though hehe). We have many experienced rottie owners here who are very helpful. Always make sure to pet your first dog before the puppy when you come home. Feed it first and help establish the chain of command. I believe it will work out fine for you though and congrats on your girl!! Trinitii ps Do lots and lots of training!

| I'm filled with envy and I just love puppy breath, some don't. We are not all that far removed from where you are now. Our girl is 9.5 months now. We had no problem introducing our pets. The Cocker (8 yrs) was the easiest. In fact he opted to sleep next to the crate of the new puppy for the first 3 nights. We'd introduced them in the livingroom, just the 2 of them, human adults closeby. They hit it off right away. The other Rottie female (6 yrs) was more resreved but also went well. She sniffed the puppy, turned to play with the Cocker and removed herself to the upstairs. After about 1 week, she began to stay longer with the pup before going upstairs. I'm pretty sure the upstairs got a bit lonely and she could hear the Cocker and the pup play. Eventually she came down to stay. The pup needs attention and training. Look for some classes you can join as soon as you are "parvo safe". In the mean time READ about various training techniques. One or another may suit your pup more. The Cocker has a huge vocabulary. He understands WORDS and does not need/use hand signals. Both Rotties respond best to hand signals. The pup does best with clicker training as she's caught on that hearing the clicker means "she got it right". The other Rottie was a house guest (already trained) and did not use clicker training.;)

| Thank you SabellesMom! We, too cannot wait to smell that puppy breath!!!! Thank you for the insight into introducing your new arrival. The clicker training really interests my husband. Our close friend has a beautiful Rodesian Ridgeback and she is very active in the agility circuit. She swears by the "click"! :p We haven't read much about clicker training with Rottie's, so it is great to know that it worked well for you. We will have to look further into it! We have read so many books, internet articles, etc....we feel like our brain is about to explode! We pick her up (the breeder is 5 hours from us) on June 1st and we can hardly stand it!Thanks Again! :D |
