Males and marking?

OK, I admit it! I have only heard about the males who mark all over the house and that it's an instinct to do so. I may want to nueter my future male when he is a little older, say 20-24 months. In the meantime, will he mark his territory in the house? I know many of you have unaltered males. If they do mark in your house, what are you doing to stop it? My guess is it's impossible unless you nueter him? I've never owned males, just females. I have owned male cats and had problems with them marking in the house, and they were nuetered...I don't want the same problem with a male dog. Any ideas? I need to learn a lot more before my future puppy comes to live with us! I'm glad I can come to this forum for answers.

Thanks. :)

I have had 5 males… none were neutered and I have never had any problems about marking inside. If one ever dared, just to think about marking inside, I would tell him in no uncertain terms to go outside and read what name is written on the door sign!!!!!!!!!! ;)

Wow! 5 males unaltered with no marking in the house!!! That's great! I guess I am all wrong when I said it was instinct to mark naturally if intact. Did you have to do any special training? I always hear complaints from unaltered dog owners and how they are always marking all over the place. You must be doing something right! :) I really need to be educated on this subject!!! ;)

It's called house training. I had one intact male that I rescued at the age of 5 and he never saw an inside of a house before I got him. It took me a week and a half to house train him and we only had 2 small accidents. I caught him both times and he learned what "outside" ment in a hurry!! I have one intact male now and he also knows where to do his "job". And it's not in the house!!

Thanks, I guess with regular housetraining, it will be a success. I appreciate your help! I definitely plan on getting my dog neutered. I guess with cats it must be much different! :D

House training is house training, male, female, intact or not. I have always had intact males and they do not use my home as their toilet. Now, that being said, if you are not equipped to own an intact male in the way of putting in the training, being in charge of the dog and your home, then it is likely the dog will own everything and piss on it at will. A dog that is occupied, trained and worked with should not make that mistake whether neutered or not.

Soooooooooo - you're going to train your boy aren't you? and keep him in training at least until he is 3 or older aren't you???? Of course you are. And heck, while you're at it you're going to put a CD and maybe a CDX on him - might as well....... :)

Just to give you an example. My Marshall is almost 27 months old and was just neutered about a month ago. He was a snap to housetrain as a puppy. Lots of work of course, but he only had one accident in the house and it was my fault. ;) But, at 10 months he started lifting his leg and tried it in the house about twice. I caught him and let him know in NO uncertain terms that marking indoors would not be tolerated. I watched him closely for a few weeks and he didn't try it again. Marking is a natural behavior but can be very successfully overcome with training. :)

Yep! You better bet I plan on giving it my very best!!! I also would like to do therapy. That would be the most rewarding thing I can think of doing with my dog! :D

Then you go girl. I adore the boys and find them most charming and yes, I raise them with much work (for them).... they love it.
