Rotties with tails

Hey question for you guys...

if you had a choice of rescuing a rottie, would it bother you if the rottie had a tail???

We had an adoption day at the weekend, and I have a little rottie pup that I am fostering (very very tiny little girl) beautiful markings, and she has a tail... This family came down to take a look at her and said they do not want a rottie with a tail... I was really shocked they said they want "breed" standards.. I explained to them that when you are rescuing a rottie - you take as is. We cannot guarantee breed standards - some even - actually quite a few that we pull from the shelters have tails because their previous irresponsible owners didn;t take the time to have the tail docked... well they said if this is our only choice then we don't want her... I was really glad actually that it worked out like that because I would have hated for them to have taken her and mistreated her .... because she has a tail .... some people are a trip!

I was really shocked that people have that hang up... after all - rottie are born with tails afterall

A tail on a rescued rottie (or even one from a breeder for that matter) would be fine with me !!! As a pet-level owner with a goal of working first in obedience and later in therapy, my first criteria would be good temperment and good health.

You are absolutely right, if this family were able to look beyond the tail, they would have seen a wonderfully sweet tempremented rottie - these days temprement is key rather than aesthetics

They don't deserve her!!!

I can’t remember when I last time saw a docked Rottweiler…(tails are breed standard in many European countries)

It’s definitely NOT what is in the behind…but what is in the head and the heart, that’s what matters!!! ;)

"I can’t remember when I last time saw a docked Rottweiler" (my quote thing isn't work)

That was exactly what I was going to say...was that if they were overseas, they would have tails. I *like* my rotties with no tails, but if I had the opportunity to rescue a sweet baby with a tail...that would not be the deciding factor.

"It’s definitely NOT what is in the behind…but what is in the head and the heart, that’s what matters!!!"

I totally agree on this!!! I look for personality and heart first.

The other thing is *occasionally* you may find a rescue that you can ILP...but that shouldnt be what your main concern is...My Elmo is a rescue and I was able to ILP him...but that was by luck.

just my 2 cents.

Damp, I agree with your statement 100%.
The other end is what those people who
would not take the "Little Rottie Girl"
were thinking with.:(

I don't own a Rottie with a tail and I
don't think I had ever seen one with a
tail before joining this forum unless
it was a mix???

They are BEAUTIFUL...I would not think
twice...lol...if I had room for another
Rottie to rescue one with a tail. I was
really impressed with the tail, I think
it was Cuccilone's Diesel that I first
saw with the tail.:)

Both of my rescue rottweilers have tails. I actively sought them out that way, although if I found one I liked with a docked tail, I would have adopted him/her.

My first rottweiler, who had a fabulous personality, had her tailed docked, but when I saw my first one with a tail, I was hooked. However, I can't imagine a tail being one of the determining factor in choosing a dog - but that's just my personal opinion.

I agree with everyone else - who cares?! Tail, no tail.... I would want to know all about her, her temperament....

Some peoples priorities are just messed up.

For the record, it's not limited to dogs. I knew of a person (with more money than brains) who was new to riding and wanted to purchase a horse. They picked up a black 3 year old Thoroughbred Stallion off of the track (so you know, just because they run around a track doesn't mean they're 'broke to ride').

When she was told that he was too much horse for her and that she should sell him she said "No. I want a black horse. I already have a black truck and a black trailer to put him in. He's beautiful. Now teach me how to ride him."

I think after seeing several people getting dumped off of him, they finally changed their tune. :p

Rottie tails are Beautiful :). I'd thank my lucky stars that they shot themselves in the foot and didn't wind up with the puppy! :)

You are soooo right:) this little pup has this long smooth sweeping tail which she wraps round herslef when she sleeps ( very much like a cat) -

We have another home lined up for her - so as they say "every bad happens for a good";)

My male rescue has a tail and I wouldn't have it anyother way,I think it gives him extra character.

What do you mean?

In my experience it's not at all difficult to get ILP--I got ILP on my rescue girl w/o any problems at all.

joquendo:

ILP = Indefinite Listing Privilege. W/ ILP you can show a purebred dog for whom you have no papers in all AKC-sanctioned events (except conformation because ILP is only granted to spayed or neutered dogs).

My beautiful grrrrrrrl Daisy (17 mos.) has a lovely tail. She keeps her feet warm at night when she curls up. Her tail was not docked at three days because she was not expected to survive. (Mom died) One healthy sister and two brothers were docked. The rest of the litter died. I fed Daisy by hand 'round the clock with a dropper to keep her alive. She only weighed about 8 ounces, and we just could not see putting her through the pain and shock of docking. She was a little fighter, did thrive, and we love her beautiful graceful sweeping tail. We just have to be careful where we put our coffee cups! :D :p
