Soapie injured by wagging tail

Okay, this is a weird one I haven't seen here before, and I will not be surprised if I get no answers.

Soapie (chow mix) is eye level with Miller (yellow lab's) tail. Actually, Buddy (rottie mix) is also eye level with Millers tail, but he hasn't been injured so far.

Tonight when I came home from work, Soapie got THWACKED right in the eye with Miller's furiously wagging tail. Miller weighs 130 lbs, Soapie is about 55.
Anyway, his tail does pack a whack. I reached over to touch her head and she yipped - something she NEVER does unless she's in extreme pain (like, stepping on her). I've probably heard her yip in pain less than 10 times in the entire time I've had her (going on eight years.) She's been really sensitive all night, ducking her head when I even reach over to her (not even petting her.)

I just wondered if anyone else with multiple dogs has this problem (it's really only when I first come home, when all the dogs are so happy to see me and crowd around the door that it is a problem - usually Soapie holds her own and then some with the other dogs).

I have three American Bulldogs in the house with happy tails that can inflict some serious pain. A friend was greeting the trio a few weeks ago and asked "Why are they all squinting?" She got her answer a moment later when Mabelene got whacked in the face by Froggy's tail. They've learned to keep their eyes half shut when in the midst of greeting excitement.

I've had Rose's tail do alot of things but so far no face damage. Guess weird things just happen sometimes.

My last dog before the rotties was a weimaraner. Their tails are docked about six inches long. While a tail that size won't whack you while wagging, it can really do some damage when it pokes you !! I used to have bruises on my legs all the time from bumping into that dang short tail !!:D :D

LOL - glad to see I'm not the only one here with this situation. I think Soapie has learned her lesson, she is really staying away from that tail now! Buddy is doing the wince thing. ;)

On coffee tables and dog proofing..

:D My folks yellow labs both greet with squinty eyes and heads turned off to the side because they whack each other SO furiously (125 lbs. and 100 lbs.) but neither will back away from the current object of happiness and delight to get out of each others way!

An old friend's Great Dane actually broke its own tail wagging it hard and into a table leg. I think that is a breed specific sort of problem.:(

Funny thing about tail-less-ness. On vacation this summer, a black dogie face poked a cold nose into me in the dark while I was trying to sleep, and I thought "my Madison". A few minutes later I was WIDE awake with the feeling "somethings wrong!!" Then I realized the nose that startled me was tail banging against the wall..and my dog doesn't make that noise! Maddie had gone into the next room and the resident black lab had wandered in!;) Even in your sleep, you recoggnize the sound your Rottie's tail doesn't make!:D

Ouch! That must've stung a bit! Hmmm.......could it be that Luna's tail fetish has it's roots in self-preservation? :D

funny, not funny haha as it hurt soapie, but funny that they have no grace when it comes to those dangerous tails, I once had a Black and Tan coon hound who cleaned my coffee table off with his tail, I learned to keep it clear when he was in!!!!!!
