| any suggestions on rottie friendly landscaping??? we are moving into a new house, nice large yard...., short of concrete, (and of course avoiding toxic plants) any suggestions??, I would like the whole family to enjoy the yard, not just our dogs..., previously, anyting under 6 ft tall would get dug up..., rocks rearranged.. etc....(better than another owner I know whose rottie ate the support posts for the deck.... ) |

| Hi Caroline, Since becoming a home owner, I have owned large dogs and I also have boys. I enjoy gardening, both flower and veggie. The key to an attractive yard is to have a place for play; ie grass and places with plants, shrubs, trees etc. I have a fenced yard and along most of the fence line is where my planting beds are. I keep kids, dogs and big balls from doing too much damage by using that wire scalloped fencing(24" high) that you can pick up at Kmart. Once your plants grow up you don't notice it, especially if you get the green wire. I have lots of day lillies, native grasses and blooming perennials. I mulch the beds with finely shedded bark mulch. The key is not to let the dogs(if young and naughty) spend much time alone. Bored dogs like to dig and chew. My kids have a cedar play set with a sand box that our dogs like to dig in. Have fun!

Besides having a yard that looks like a battlefield, bored unattended Rotties will eat just about anything. Toxic or not, ingesting foriegn objects can and does kill many dogs. I have four dogs. They are mostly indoors but when they are out, they are being trained, played with or watched. My yard is free of holes and my landscaping is fine. Pups learn very quickly what is a toy and what is NOT. I hear of entire sprinkling systems being dug up and consumed, cable TV wires chewed up, and even one dog who consumed most of the tire off of an RV that was parked in the rear yard. IMO, this is completely unnecessary! It poses a huge risk to the health of the dog and makes the owner angry which is detrimental to the relationship between them. If pups are left to thier own devices, they will soon develop a pattern of behavior that can leave them unadoptable when the owner finally has had a gutfull of the destruction of property and decides to dump the dog. Just as responsible dog owners teach thier dogs to have good manners, these bored youngsters are systematically being taught that "Hey, if you're bored, lonely, or have any kind of anxiety....Find something to destroy! It will make you feel so much better!" Make sense?

| great suggestions from all, I had planned on giving them a digging pit... , the dobie is just loves digging, the rotties don't seem to be destructive out of boredom, but enthusiasm, they start playing, and loose thier minds... they crash through anything....and run around like maniacs.... I am sure you all have seen it, hop hop dash, hop hop dash... ... and they both love to carry large rocks around...., and sticks etc.... but that is our fault, we haven't been very good about telling them no you can't have rocks.... has anyone tried the dog repellent on plants??? |
