| Suggestions for building dog kennel I need advice on how to build a dog kennel enclosure for my new puppy who will be coming home in 3 weeks. Before I get flamed, this kennel is temporary until the puppy gets some size on him. I have a 7 year old female who definately has "only child" syndrome and I dont want to leave the puppy alone with her when I am not home and leaving the puppy in a crate all day seems cruel. I plan on keeping them both together with free roam of the house (like my female has) when he grows up and they get adjusted to one another. I plan on keeping the puppy in the kennel and the female outside of the kennel in my backyard when we are at work. I was planning on going to home depot and buying the chain link fence parts and making an enclosure. I cant find any plans on the internet on how to do it. The kennel will be on dirt so I cant figure out what to do for the floor so the puppy cant dig out. I dont want to pour a concrete slab because that would be expensive and also I only plan on having this kennel temporarily. Any advice or direction would be greatly appreciated. |

My hubby and I built a chain link kennel in our garage. Home Depot has a set specifically for dog kennels, it comes with all the parts and plans. You can either get a 6 (wide) x 10 (long) x 6 (high) or a 6 x 6 x 4 (which seems more like what you want. It does take two people to build, but it's not all that difficult. I don't know what you could put down on the dirt, but the fact that you have chosen to keep your dogs seperate is a very good idea. Our dogs are kept seperate as well, and they've grown up together. You never know what can happen when your not around (or even when you are!) Good Luck, and Congrats on the new pup!

| I got some fencing that resembles chicken wire (it’s a much thicker gauge) and dug down 12” along the fence line, connected the new fencing to the chain link fence (with the ties you use to connect the chain link to the poles) and covered the trench back up. Now if the dog wants to dig out it has to go down at least a foot. This will also work with a prefab kennel. Good luck. |

| You can use 12X12 patio blocks for the floor. |

| you could also use plywood for the flooring... I would cut strips to set around the perimeter, say 1-2 foot wide and leave a section bare, for potty purposes... I don't see a young pup digging enough to warrant any real concern.. but then again... all pups are different good luck

| There are some places on the internet that also sell the chain link fence for kennels for dogs. I couldn't find one at a Home Depot near me so I went on the proll on the net and found a place that sold them about 45 miles away. I had to rent a truck to go pick it up! Then I went to home depot and bought one extra piece I needed to customize it. I built my kennel on my own, it is one of the crowning achievements of my life. It did take over a week of full time work, and I had to buy several power tools, but I did it. I gave tours after it was first constructed. :)
