Building a Major??

If you are contacted, and asked to help build a major, do you??
Because of circumstances in my life right now, I have not been out showing very often. Last show I entered, I entered because it was close to home, and I planned on showing my bitch myself. Low and behold, we go, and I find out the put together a bitch major. Arthur Favors handles my male for me, and he happened to be there with someone else that day. Well, he handled my girl and she took the major. WONDERFUL experience. But not really the point here.
I was called to help build another major. How often do you all try to help build majors, or do you just do it on your own, so to speak? I am entering the two days I can because of my work schedule, but it also comes during a time I am preparing to move, so... I want to help, just am not sure if I can spare the time, need to be moved by end of March and have lots and lots of packing yet to do. So, anyway, I am curious what you all do.

Re: Building a Major??

I did not mean to imply I have a problem with the "building" of a major, if I did. This one comes at a bad time for me, but I just wondered if it was a normal thing and how many people participate in it.
I live a in small town, and you have to travel far for Majors normally, so I appreciate that this is being put together so close to home. If they opened it up to tailed Rottweilers as well, maybe it wouldn't be so hard to find majors. I know a lot of people who have tailed Rotts but do not show in AKC because of the "attitudes" they get. Instead they show in the German venues, which I like, but I do not wish to have to join their club to show.
Anyway, that is off subject, so...

Re: Building a Major??

As far as I am concerned, building a major is to encourage people to enter a show, ie put the thought into their heads. If people have a dog/bitch to show, can afford the money involved, have the time, etc, all is good. Just because a person or group is trying to build a major doesn't mean you have to enter. It is your dog, money and time after all.
As far as tails go, there really isn't that many of them out there that would make a difference. People with tails are not interested in showing AKC for the most part. If they did, they wouldn't have gotten a dog with a tail. If they did want to enter, there is nothing that is stopping them. Either the judge is going to like their dog or not, just like every other entry there. Sour grapes as far as I am concerned.

Re: Building a Major??

The way I look at it, is that we all have the same goal. We ALL need majors to finish. If your girl already has her majors then don't worry about it. If not, then go for it. You are helping others while helping yourself in the process.

Re: Building a Major??

right now, it is becoming very hard to find a major. financially, many people are not showing.
i need a last major, and i kind of gave up. between few shows and losing much money by entering and no major or it breaks, i have given up. those that are majors are far away and i do not want to be without my dog.
i have asked before to try to make a major, but if people can't, they won't. if they can, they will try to enter something.

Re: Building a Major??

Terri, No I was not at the show. I have not had my girl out since Oct. 31st. She got her first and only major there. They are trying to build the major in York, PA for anyone who want to take part. I need to decide ASAP which days I am entering. With having to do the packing, and getting out of my current residence before the end of the month, I am not sure I should enter, though I would like to help out with building the major. As for the tail thing, fbkeays, I have a tailed girl and would consider entering her to help build the major, but I know she would be excused, and it would be a waste of my money. So, if I enter any of my dogs, it will be the docked one. There are not very many German style shows around here, and I would love to show my tailed girl in AKC, but I will not as long as people have the attitude that they do.

Why are you POSITIVE that you will be excused? Your tailed Rott has just as much of a right to be in the ring as the docked Rotts.

Who are the judges? Only a very few of breeder judges "might" excuse for lack of merit. Otherwise the worst that a judge can do is put your girl at the back of the line. My dogs have won majors one day and been at the back of the line the next. It is called a dog show.
If you wanted a show dog and you feel that tailed dogs won't get looked at, why in the world did you chose to get a dog with a tail???? As I said earlier, sour grapes.

Re: Building a Major??

I bought the tailed girl for her bloodlines. I intended to show her in the few USRC shows that are close to home. Unfortunately, as is my understanding, they now require you to become members of the USRC in order to show in their shows. I am not willing to do that, because if I ever breed, I will be docking the tails to show them in AKC. USRC banned tail docking and will fine members who dock, as I understand it. Though I did not go to USRC website, I am a member of another forum with lots of USRC and German show stuff being posted. After reading those posts, I know I will not be showing in USRC. AS for showing her in AKC, yes, I will do it sometime, but she does need to mature a bit, as well as some more basic obedience training. Because I intended to show her in USRC, she is not "trained" for the AKC breed ring. Once I am moved and settled in to my new place, I will start working on that with her. AT this point, we would be excused, because she does not know stand, stay. She would be constant motion. And, I have been told by someone who owned one of the few, the first tailed AKC champion, that the dog must have better manners than your average Rott. Once her manners are down pat, we will be going into the AKC ring, until then.....
If I had any clue how to post pictures here, I would post the few I have, but I have no good current pictures. They were taken when she was about a year old.

Re: Building a Major??

USRC has dropped the Membership requirement and everyone is allowed to take part in ALL shows as of the Nationals this past May. They have a whole new team on board...

Hope to see you at the shows with your dogs...
