Roman or standard rottweilers

In recent months i came across some web site offering roman (large mastiff type rotts) and standard rotts.

The roman type are very expensive and look huge but does not have the shape of a rott.

What do you think about it.

That fools are often quickly parted from their money.

Have you read the standard? There's no such thing as a Roman Rottweiler.

Re: Roman or standard rottweilers

So-called "Roman" Rottweilers are out-of-standard freaks, but you can't charge an arm and a leg for an "out-of-standard freak" (just like you can't charge an arm and a leg for a mutt, but you CAN charge an arm and a leg if you call it a "Goldendoodle").

My view is: if you're going to breed a purebred dog, breed it to the breed standard, if you want to create a new breed, then follow the time-consuming, expensive, hard work steps involved in doing so ethically. But don't pretend that breeding mutant Rottweilers and giving them a name is anything but unethical.

Re: Roman or standard rottweilers

yeah, thats what i thought. i believe dogs should be bred to there specific breed standard. Sometimes i notice that people are looking for big dogs.

Today i got a call from a breeder asking how she can purchase a big rottweiler for stud, she said that the demand is for big rotties.

She also has a lab that is way tall for his breed & you should see the demand for his services.

By the way i am totally against custom & modified breeds

right and if you were experienced with the breed (enough to breed them yourself) then you would KNOW that it is all BS.

Re: Roman or standard rottweilers

The roman rottie breeders claim that theyre closer to the original rottie line. Theyre supposed to be taller and leaner than what is sometimes being called the American variety-though its the standard worldwide.

Like any designer dog theyre breeding outside of standard without the intent of making a new breed and without the ability to guarantee health.
