Frozen semen

I want to know your opinion about buying frozen semen. I think that this could be a good an inexpensive way to get top puppies, but I don't really know the veterinary costs or legal regulations. Can anyone give me some guidance? Thanks.

Re: Frozen semen

Inexpensive??????

Um, NO.

When you buy it, that is the first cost involved.

You can also add to that:

1. Shipping costs (which in my experience range from $350-$1000) just to get it to your repro vet.

2. Storage fees at your repro vet, which will vary.

3. Progesterone testing leading up to breeding your bitch - count on 2 - 5 tests at about $70-$90 a pop.

3. Surgical Implantation which is the only way to make use of frozen semen - this will vary, I paid $1200CDN.

If you are buying frozen semen CHEAP, you need to ask yourself WHY? This is usually/normally the cost of a stud fee (so $1000-$2000 in my experience) - so you also want to make sure that all of the health checking has been done on the stud dog you are buying from. Ask why it is forsale since most frozen semen in like GOLD to the average breeder/stud dog owner and not disposable.

Personally, I would only buy the semen from a dog I am totally in love with and that I knew the history on the dog. Although I don't know the story of why you are buying semen, if it is a situation of a 'semen liquidation' (no pun intended), then I would ask why and go from there before checking into costs.

Re: Frozen semen

Kristi,

Thanks for answering my question. I'm absolutely crazy about 2 dogs: Umbro vom Sittard and Arzadon's Tyson.

I have a female daughter of Djuke vom Vislander Land and I want to bread my girl with one of those 2 studs, but in the first case (Umbro) in Germany they don't allowed to sell frozen semen. And in the case of Tyson the cost is $800 Euro, but I didn't knew the expenses that it involved.

I got talk to the Vet and see what's his recomendation.

Why do you want to "breed" your girl?

Re: Frozen semen

And one other thing to consider......if you are importing semen, there are many horror stories about customs delaying the shipment or actually opening the container and causing the semen to thaw!

You'd best do a LOT of research before importing and make sure it's the right way to go for you.

I'm with Skip.....exactly why do you want to cross this girl with these dogs? Have you seen a cross between these lines before? Or do you just like the look of the dogs? There is so much more to it than that and I certainly hope that you plan to have all your health certifications in place and titles on your girls prior to the breeding.

We just did a frozen semen implant on one of our girls two weeks ago. We own the semen and even at that, it cost us almost $1000 to get it done with the surgical implant costs, the progesterone testing, the lab fees, etc.

And......there is no guarantee of puppies either.
