Potential Show Dog

Hello everyone,
I have a 6 month old male Rottweiler that I plan to show if he turns out like
I think he will.
The breeder would also like me to show him.
My question is, how do I know whether he is show material or not?
Is there somewhere I need to take him to be examined?
Sorry if this is a stupid question, new to the show thing.

If your breeder thinks your puppy is show material, what makes you think you can't trust what the breeder of your puppy is telling you? I don't understand why you're doubting what your breeder is saying.

Moho, I agree with Angelbunny. Most breeders would not want to see one of their pups in the ring who shouldn't be there! So, if your breeder is game for having this pup shown and is an ethical, trustworthy breeder than you have nothing to worry about

What the heck Moho, take a couple of handling classes, look and see if there are any fun matches coming up and give it a try. 6-9 month class is fun. You say you plan to show him and your breeder wants you to so trust your breeder and see what the judges think.

Thanks for the input AngelBunny
It's not that I doubt the breeder, I happened to be at a dog run and one of the people there asked me when I was going to have my dog neutered.
I answered probably never because I planned on showing him and you can not show a neutered dog in AKC.
She then asked if I had him tested yet because not just any dog can be shown.
If I understand you correctly, as long as we (the breeder and I) think the dog is good enough, we should go ahead and show the dog and see how he does.

I thought I would wait till Kato (named after Green Hornets side kick and body guard, not OJ simpson's house mate) turned a year old before showing.
I'd like to spend the summer with him training, swimming and camping.
I'm not much of a winter person and showing during winter would give me and Kato something to do.

Re: Potential Show Dog

If you have an AKC registration and two testicles and no disqualifying faults you can show him. I have no Idea what that person meant.

A show can be very stressful for the newbie(s). I feel that it's very important for the both of you to get will your guy is young. You may not accomplish much because of the first time gitters but you may also be pleasantly surprised! Definatley take some classes and get feed back from your breeder and other handlers. If your not quit comfortable doing it on your own yet ask (possilbly pay) a handler to help out. I've personally found others to be very helpful in my quest taking on the showring. And yes even those elussive professionals can be willing to give pointers.

Re: Potential Show Dog

What you have to realize is that a lot of folks in SF are AR, especially in dog parks. There is no test, written or oral.
There are lots of dog shows in the fall and winter in the area. In October there is two back to back specialties in Pleasanton. A specialty is a single breed show. So a rottweiler specialty is a show with just rottweilers. Also check out the German style shows, which is also just rottweilers. USRC clubs are in the general area and put on a couple of shows a year.
If you get to Crissy fields you might see our own LynnS with her bitch, Bella. Bella will have a big ball. She can give you lots of info about handling classes in the area and such.

Not sure what AR is.
I know LynnS and have met Bella at Crissy Fields.
LynnS is a customer at my work.
I have met with her at 4 or 5 different shows.
She is also the person that referred me to my breeder.
She is very knowledgeable and has been a lot of help.

Re: Potential Show Dog

AR = Animal Rights people. (people who believe ALL animals should be speutered)

Have your breeder evaluate the pup as time goes by. If LynnS introduced you to the breeder, you likely have a very nice pup.

You'll no doubt quickly learn to ignore JohnQPublic and their 'helpful and carying advice'... and learn to communicate with your breeder when people blow smoke up your butt.

Re: Potential Show Dog

if your breeder has recently evaluated him and thinks he is good to show, then next step, enter matches(fun shows-no points/for practice and experience/less stress).
i agree to let him have fun, and mature. some people start showing a young dog and get upset and quit when they don't win right away-it takes time, especially with a male. but doing handling classes and trying him in local matches and shows for experience will do you both good, to see if you and him likes it.
other people that can also give a show potential opinion are breeder/judges, breed handlers, other breeders.
check out shows akc and german style to compare.

Re: Potential Show Dog

If LynnS referred you to your breeder, I have a pretty good idea who your breeder is and it would be worth your while to trust what she says. Also, she's very active in the German style shows in the area. I would suggest you enter some of the upcoming shows this year and have some fun.

There are three German style rottweiler shows coming up this fall. One will be Wine Country Rottweiler Club, a USRC club, and will be held in Dixon, CA. It will be September 22-23. If your breeder is who I think it is, she is a member of this club.

The second show will the the ARV National Sieger show. This will be held in the Sacramento area. It will be October 27-28. Got to http://www.arv.org for more information.

The third show will be held by Bay Area Rottweiler Klub, another member club of the United States Rottweiler Club, and will be held in Turlock, CA. It hasn't been scheduled yet, but will most likely be early-mid November (aiming for November 10-11 or 17-18 - depending on when the AKC shows are in town).

So, you have a great opportunity to get some show experience with your pup this year. These are pretty relaxed shows and you should have a lot of fun with your pup.

If you'd like some more information, feel free to pm me.

Re: Potential Show Dog

Okay, great. So, how does somebody contact somebody else without having to broadcast to the entire world what they want to talk about? And, how do I convey my contact information to somebody who may wish to contact me if they'd like more information? I don't have a webpage.

Gads, I guess I'm way behind the curve.

Okay, I'm the Northwest Assistant Regional Director for the United States Rottweiler Club (USRC). Go to http://www.usrconline.org/contacts.html and find my listing there. An email address for contacting me is listed.
