| Correct coloring of front legs? Hi everyone, I just posted a new pic of Brutus in the gallery. I've had a lot of comments and suggestions to get into conformation with him, my concern is the coloring of his front legs, I think the mahogany comes down too far. Any experts out there that can take a look and let me know what you guys think? The pic only shows one leg! Thanks |

| Re: Correct coloring of front legs? thanks Elisabeth, I didn't get much feedback so let me ask the question another way..i have read and re-read the standard description of markings for rotts, the description of leg markings does not make sense to me, so-how far down is the mahogany color supposed to extend? |

| Re: Correct coloring of front legs? I think that you are over functioning on this. Your question doesn't seem to make any sense to me. But I will try to answer what I think your question is based on my three show quality rottweilers that are in my house. Front legs. I would actually describe their front legs as being all "tan" (easier word to spell), with black covering the front part of the leg and tappering down until the top of the "wrist". The inside and back of the front legs are tan from the paws up until almost to the elbow. The distance of the tan up to the elbow varies somewhat on my three dogs. One is an inch below the elbow and the other two are about three inches below the inside elbow. The tan on the paws should be free of black hairs except for "pencil" markings at each nail. Black hairs on top of the paws are called, "sooty" or "muddy" paws and is a fault. Color of the "tan" is somewhat important. The darker/redder color is preferred over actual tan. Straw colored or light markings are a fault. I really think that you are making a mountain out of a mole hill as I haven't encountered anyone being all that hung up on the leg markings. I would say if your dog looks like a rottweiler then you are fine.

| Re: Correct coloring of front legs? I don't know what you mean by "comes down too far" either, but I agree with Francis. End result, your pup's markings are just fine.

| Re: Correct coloring of front legs? brutus'mother, Francis is right, you are over analyzing things! ![]() Bottom line, you have a nice looking boy from what I can see of him in the pic. He's a puppy - ENJOY THAT while you can. It's not going to last long! More important to pay attention to how he's teething, and make sure he's healthy and happy and learning to live in your world. Have you enrolled him in puppy classes yet?

| Re: Correct coloring of front legs? I am not analyzing anything, just asking a simple question from what I consider "people who know", I did not get him to show but have learned (mostly from this site) the importance of training/titling. I clearly think he is the mosy gorgeous rott ever. poohbearsmom-to answer your question he has been through 6 weeks of in home private training, a 6 week puppy class at a all breeds training center which ended last night and we start our next obedience class next week. He is well socialized and very happily learning to live in my world. One final thought....I love this site, I have learned so much from the plethera of info available here BUT I am curious as to why when a question is asked in an attempt to LEARN about the breed there is criticism about over analyzing......it was a question, so who is over analyzing? |

| Re: Correct coloring of front legs? You asked about maybe getting into conformation with him. Then asked about the maghogany marking going "down too far". That question was just very odd as the tan markings are pretty standard on a rottweiler as far as placement/location goes. It is actually the last thing that anyone in conformation thinks of. If you asked about color, that is a concern. But people with a show potential dog worry and stress about so many other things that your question was so out in left field. If you want to worry about your dog, worry about all of his teeth coming in and being in the right place. Worry about his mouth and eye pigment. Worry about his top line. Worry about if his rear is cowhocked and his front is east-west. Worry about the slope of his croup and the angle of his stub(even the length of his stub!). Worry about his gait. Worry about his cheek fill. Worry about his length to height ratio. Worry if he is going to have enough rib spring. But the one thing that I have never heard anyone worry about was where their dog's tan markings went to. Relax. Smile. Laugh! If all you are worried about is how long his tan markings go on his front legs, you have absolutely nothing to worry about! Now go out and have some fun with your dog as he is perfect.

| Re: Correct coloring of front legs? I think he ment up too far. On both of my dogs the tan markings end about half way up on the inside of the leg. On his puppy's picute it goes practically to the elbow. This is from the standard: on forelegs from carpus downward to the toes. If it is too far up I wouln't worry about it, it is such a minor fault.
