Showing a CH dog

What is the reason for showing an already championed dog? I went to a local dog show yesterday and saw a couple of beautiful dogs that were in the best of breed catagory. It had a very small number of entries and it made me wonder why a big shot dog would show at a smaller venue when it was already championed.

I would see it as a hobby, just for fun, but that is just me

Post Re: Showing a CH dog

I think they call these dogs "specials"? All of the dogs shown in Westminster are already Champions.
They may be showing their Champion dogs to get a BIS win? There are many reasons.
In Canada now with the Canadian Kennel Club, a Champion can get a Grand Champion title.

I'm sure someone that shows their dogs will have a better explanation.

Re: Showing a CH dog

Champion Dogs continue to show, to try to get Nationally Ranked.

Every time they win Best of Breed they get to count every dog they defeat in the Breed ring. So if there were 25 dogs entered, they would accumulate 24 'points' for defeating the other 24 dogs in the ring.

It woud be the same for taking Group placements. If they took a Group 1, they would get to count EVERY dog entered in the individual breeds in the Working Group (ie: Dobermans, Newfoundlands, Akitas, etc).

The AKC counts these dogs defeated points, and rank the dogs in the Rottweiler breed, as well as how they rank against the other Working Dogs.

And the American Rottweiler Club counts these dogs defeated points towards the Top 20 for the breed. (ARC also counts Best of Opposite Sex wins towards the Top 20 total points).

Clear as mud ??

Re: Showing a CH dog

Along with the information given - I'd say that most Champion titled dogs LOVE - let me repeat - LOVE to be in the ring........the highlight of their week/month is stepping into that ring with their peers and 'putting on the dog'. If I had a champion titled dog, I would continue showcasing him/her until it was no longer fun for the dog. The 'rush' talked about here by handlers when showing and winning, is surely equally shared by the dog!
