What goes on in these shows

I'm looking at a list of shows but since I'm not a competitor, I don't know what goes on in these types of shows. Can someone explain.

Specialty
Match
Rally
Parent Specialty
etc....

When they have specialty listed next to a kennel club does that mean the show is only for that particular breed, or are different breeds included.

Thanks,
Confused?

Re: What goes on in these shows

Specialty is a show for only one breed of dog. An all breed show may be designated as a breed's specialty as well. That usually means that the local or regional club has chosen to support the show. The judge for the specialty breed is usually a recognized expert in the breed; it may be the only breed that they judge that day; veteran and puppy sweepstakes are often offered as well as stud dog and brood bitch classes; special awards and/or trophies are offered in that breed only.

A Match is a "pretend" show, offered usually for conformation and/or obedience. There are varying levels of match shows offered, seen as "A" matches or "B" matches; couldn't really tell you the difference as I don't usually do matches.

Rally is a new type of obedience in AKC that allows more interaction between the dog and handler and not so rigid a course.

Parent Specialty is a specialty hosted or sponsored by the national club recognized by the AKC for the breed. In Rotties, that would be the ARC.

Re: What goes on in these shows

Thanks for the post. I take it that although it says "specialty" the public is still welcome to watch the competition, right? and the doors aren't open only for those competing.

Re: What goes on in these shows

shows are open to spectators.
there are many types of shows or competitions.
conformation-breed structure show/judging to breeds' standards.
obedience-formal obedience/various levels from novice to utility.
agility-obstacle course dog must complete while handler directs.many levels.
rally-obedience, but more fun, you can talk more to dog, read signs with commands and perform them.
schutzhund-obedience,protection,tracking competition,various levels.
flyball-relay racing with teams of 4 dogs and tennis balls/hurdles.
specialty-a specific breed show.held on it's own or in conjuction with an all breed show or other specialties.
nationals-the parent club of the breed big show.
matches-fun shows, wins carry no championship points.A matches start clases at 6 mos and divide classes similar to a real show. B matches include a 3-6 mos class/6-9/9-12 and adult.most clubs hold B matches.
CGC-canine good citizen test-a obedience/temperament test open to all dogs that can perform the exercises-demonstrates a well behaved member of society.
TT- a temperament test offered by ATTS.open to all dogs.
there is also hunting,carting,earthdog,herding,field trials,etc...
some are restricted to certain breeds/some open to all breeds/some even allow mixed or unpapered dogs.
a good place to see upcoming AKC shows is infodog.com
