AKC colors

Can anyone tell me how to tell what color a Rottweiler pup is? The AKC papers give 3 choices: Black and Mahogany, Black and Rust and Black and Tan. Thanks!

If you know the difference between the colors tan, rust, and mahogany, then there's your answer.

Look at your pup....markings of tan are the lightest the markings should be. The richer and darker the markings are, the more desirable. The deeper markings look almost dark orange/rust. And it goes without saying, the dominant color is black.

Any other colors are not acceptable. It really doesn't make too much of a difference what you check off, as the three choices you listed are acceptable.

My sister just got a Rottweiler pup, and I hadn't known that there are three colors of Rott. Are they three distinct colors, or just variations of the same color? I guess the question is genetic...

Our breeder told us which to check off...Mook is black and mahogany, according to him (but I think I would have picked rust ). Check the pic of him under picture this, and see if that's what yours looks like.

Yes, just variations of the same color. The deeper and richer the markings, the better as "straw" colored markings are a fault.

My dog is black/mahogany. It looks deep, rich, burnt-orange like. But on the vet paperwork they sometimes check "black/tan".

Another way of putting it is like the difference between a powder blue and a dark blue.

I agree with you...I would have picked black/rust too. But no matter though.

Thers is some veterinary medicine significance to "black and tan". It's not actual color (as in "tan versus rust"). There are other "black and tan" dogs besides Rottweilers in the vet medicine language. I believe that there are some typical antibiotics which are dangerous for the "black and tan". I'll check next time I'm at the vet, though there are probably several people here who know already.

When you see a true Black & Mohogany Rotty...you'll know it. It's breath taking.

On the 1st page of the gallery is a nice pic of EROS VON DER BURG WEIBERTREU. INDIRA FATHER.

My pup has darked up even more id youlook at her pic on my gallery younotice her eye brows are darker and some of her muzzel fur.

One thing to keep in mind is that photos can be deceptive.

It seems that the German dogs have more mohogany trim than the US dogs???

For registration purposes you simply chose the shade that best describes your pup. Irishsetter red or darker is mahogany, middle color is rust and tan is an :)

For genetics and in general dog language terms this color pattern IS black & tan. The black and tan gene is typically termed AT AT and in general black & tan patterned dogs seem to be more susceptible to parvovirus, no matter the breed

Look at the pictures of daisy in the gallery and in my avitar. She is marked down as black and mahogany. ( I though rust more appropriate)
