Hey everyone Great forums here...So I joined Its about my 6 month Rottie Boomer (aka Poomperoo). I'm not sure if his parents were show dogs or not, as my brother got him for us..But along his shoulder, there is a line of grey/white hairs showing...his undercoat. Also, the fur on that web connecting his leg to his body (what do you call that? lol) swirls a bit...and the hair along the backside of his thighs is very long. I was wondering if this is normal (I know its a disqualification, but we dont show Poompers anyway) and if any other Rottie owner's furry kids have longer hair or undercoats showing etc...? Thanks for any light you can shed on this :P Oh yeah, the fur right below his ear in a straight line is long too, when he perks them up. ^_^

Re: Undercoat showing...coat too long..? Toby also has a very thick undercoat and you can see the grey coming through on his shoulders....don't really think you are supposed to see it...but there it is.He's about as far away from a "show dog" as you can get....!

| Re: Undercoat showing...coat too long..? Undercoat often shows through, especially in heavy coated or shedding dogs Most Rottweilers have longer coat on the backs of their thighs. Breeching. Without seeing a photo we can't say if his coat is too long. Pups do often go through many different coats as they grow also

Re: Undercoat showing...coat too long..? ohh so that's what breeching is... Boomer is no show dog either Steph :P I think his coat is a bit too long for the Rottie standards...he also has a little sprout of long hair on his chest -_-'

"Outer coat is straight, coarse, dense, of medium length and lying flat. Undercoat should be present on neck and thighs, but the amount is influenced by climatic conditions. Undercoat should not show through outer coat. The coat is shortest on head, ears and legs, longest on breeching. The Rottweiler is to be exhibited in the natural condition with no trimming. Fault--Wavy coat. Serious Faults--Open, excessively short, or curly coat; total lack of undercoat; any trimming that alters the length of the natural coat. Disqualification--Long coat." My Duncan does have a bit of a wave, so that is a fault, but other then that, he has a very correct coat. I had him at a Joan Klem breed seminar a few years ago. He was there to be part of the group of dogs to be critiqued for current and future judges and anyone else wanting to know more about the breed standard. Joan Klem stated that Duncan had a very correct coat except for the slight wave. She said that we were losing this part of the breed. Just before she said that, a breeder, who is now a judge, proclaimed loudly that Duncan was a long coated rottweiler. Joan Klem corrected her just as loudly and even compared Duncan's coat to that of another dog that was there, not realizing that the "other" dog was this breeder's dog. A rottweiler coat is not supposed to be like a dobe coat in length or texture.

Re: Undercoat showing...coat too long..? Most Rotts have incorrect coats? I find that amazing. Most of our German judges will tell you that they see quite a change in coats with dogs they know well after they have been here in the US for a period of time because here they are almost always living indoors and because of the milder weather. True the Rottweiler does have a variation in coat from medium to medium longer, just as some have that wave down the back, but I don't believe that means that "most" have incorrect coats. I have not seen any Doberman short coats in the ring.

Re: Undercoat showing...coat too long..? Regarding the coats of Rottweilers, I found these pictures (quite some time ago) of early Rottweilers living in Germany. The coats are not overly long or dense, but we sure have changed the body structure, haven't we?!

Re: Undercoat showing...coat too long..? I'm in NJ and Berit has a thick black black undercoat on the specified areas of his body. His coat is dense and very deeply colored. He blows it twice a year and sheds like he's going bald. Then during the summer it's light on the undercoat, not light color, but not as heavy. He has dark mouth pigment too. His outer coat is very slightly crispy, straight, flat and not soft. His coat gets a lot softer on his head, ears and muzzle. Berit
