Smile Thank you members :)

When I got my first rottweiler puppy, It was like I had won the lottery. He brings a smile to my face everyday and I enjoy him so much. I immediately considered breeding him to gain my money back. I was very inexperienced with owning a rottweiler and looking back would consider myself ignorant of the breed and breeding. I started spending lots of time reading through all the threads and posts on here ( I have lots of time because my husband is in Afghanistan). I have gained so much knowledge and information that my understanding has completely changed. If you would have asked me a couple months ago why I wanted to breed my dog, I probably would have said something along the lines of "gaining money back", or "why not?" I now understand that it takes SOO much more than just a "good looking" or "nice" rottie. Breeding should be done to produce quality rotties that adhere to the breed standard. My answer questioning my reasoning on breeding would now be somewhere along the lines of - to produce the best quality rotties and to improve the standard. I now understand that before you breed, there are several things that have to be done to produce ideal puppies. The bare minimum would be the dog would be registered. Next, lots of training and socialization. I would then gain my dog in as many titles as possible such as Sch, obedience, conformation, herding..etc. After gaining several titles to prove he is a true working dog that conforms to the rottie standard, I would then get his health clearances: eyes, elbows, heart, and hips. If and only if all those came back positive, then I would get him Std tested. Once he has gained titles in Sch and conformation, positive health clearances, and STD free, I would then begin my seach for the perfect bitch. All this takes lots of time, patience, and money. I cannot even imagine the cost and patience when the puppies arrrive! It is not about how much profit you will make off selling the puppies. You have to take in account the pre-breeding tests, stud fee, whelping supplies, pre-natal care, tail docking, shots, boosters, akc registration and not to mention the time and patience of finding good homes! I now understand that alot more goes into breeding than most people realize and many breeders do not even make a profit! They breed Rotties because they love the breed and want to improve it. I want to thank all you members for having patience and the willingness to educate the ignorant. Thank you guys!

Southerngirl238. How refreshing to read your post. Well done for being willing to learn what responsible, ethical breeding is all about.

You have the best interest of our breed at heart. Hopefully others who intend to breed their 'nice' dog will take your lead and learn what ethical breeding involves before jumping up and down when it's suggested their dog should not be bred.

Re: Thank you members :)

I also had no idea what was involved breeding!! Its crazy & i put my hand up to those who do it successfully & the right way for all involved. I wish i had more knowledge before i became a rotti owner. I love my puppies so much but wish i had done more research between the BYB & actuall experienced ROTTWEILER BREEDERS...i will not make the same mistakes again regarding BYB. Im very lucky to have my babies but supporting that industry im not proud of! Ive learnt so much...
